recovery gear tips please! :)

I carry a bar of soap with me in my tool bag.

I thought I was an off roader, having ridden bikes and buggys in the desert for many years, I got nothin on some of these guys.

We were on John Bull a couple years ago and I smacked my oil pan on a rock and got a leak... I thought I was done.

One of the old timers in my club came over with a bar of soap, rubbed it on the hole and it stopped the leak.

After topping off the oil, I drove the whole trail, spend the night in big bear, then drove home to Temecula, left the jeep sitting till the following weekend when I had the time to replace the oil pan... Not a drop leaked out that whole time.

You can plug holes in your oil pan, radiator, gas tank, pretty much anything that holds fluid. AND you can wash your hands with the same bar of soap when you're done.

Here's what I have always carried:

Basic first aid kit, in a box. I buy the ones at Walmart

Basic tools in a tool bag, plus some specialty tools, like a socket big enough to remove a pinion nut, etc.

Tow strap, jumper cables, flashlights, a fire extinguisher, a bottle jack, and a couple of MRE's (I got stuck on a trail overnight once...it sucked not having food...never again). I also carry an organizer with assorted nuts and bolts, and electrical repair kit, a fold-up shovel, and a pair of work gloves.

I'm sure there's stuff I'm forgetting, but believe it or not, all that stuff fit behind the rear seat in a TJ, with an add-a-trunk.

For longer trips, I also carry a little battery operated welder, and extra food and water.

lets go ahead and throw in a radiator. And while we are at it, some Coolant. Oh and lets not forget a front gear set. Maybe a water pump? What about a crank position sensor and a alternator? Dont forget a starter?

I am not trying to sound like a butt, but where does it all stop?

I have a spare cps in my toolbag, and I carry a spare pitman arm. Also a spare driveshaft if going on longer trips. It's good for front or rear.

There is a limit to what can fit, for sure, but...

There's not a single thing that I carry that I haven't needed at one time or another. The list of things I carry isn't based on what could happen....it's based on what HAS happened.

Drivehsafts are a no-brainer. I have broken countless driveshafts and u-joints over the years.

Also, a plug kit and OBA. I'd rather plug a tire than change a spare, and I don't carry a spare unless I'm going on a camp-as-you-go style trip like the Dusy or Mojave Rd. In the last 10 years, I have only used my spare once, and that was before I got my plug kit.

The pitman arm is there because I broke one once, and it sucked.....sucked BAD.

Other than that, just basic stuff. Tools are incredibly important to have, but if you absolutely HAD to go bare minimum, you could get by with a hammer, a punch of some sort, a large screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and a vice grips.
