Rebuilding an AMC tire carrier

Slow progress on this project, needed to put new hubs on the XJ, so that took front seat priority. Brackets are ready for install, so i can mock up where everything will go (closing and locking would be nice). Trying to think if I want to attach to the hatch or not. Stock mech is going the way of the dodo, since I don't have one nor will it be completely stock in mounting with the JCR recovery bumper in rear.

You should try and retain the rear bumper as a locking mechanism, the hatch it far too weak to do the job, even If you make or get an aftermarket latch, or pin setup and weld it on the carrier and bumper.heres some side pics i forgot to put up :)
