Ok, so I installed some speakers in tehe rear doors a couple of years back becasue I got the 2 speaker system. Everywhere I look, it says that the speakers go in the roof of the cherekee. Did I screw up? Where are they supposed to go? I can move them if I need to, since I never cut the psace in the door panel for the grill...
Ahh, I see. Found this picture on ebay. So umm, is this do-able? Or shoudl I jsut cut the door panel out and keep them where they are? What parts would I need?
What picture did you find? Anyway, there were two options; you could get the soundbar in the rear over the cargo area, or there is room in the rear hatch to mount a pair of....4x6?
The sound bar in my 98 is integrated into the headliner, guess there must be an add on sound bar for some models. The soundbar speakers are no great thing, in hot weather I've had the covers pop off, I can't carry a tune in a bucket but other assure me that their OEM sound reproductive quality leaves alot to be desired. I listen to book tapes mosty so I dont really care..
My 00' has the sound bar that is integreated into the headliner, my 95' has a removeable soundbar. From the view of an professional (certified) audio installer, I am not using the overhead locations when i finally get around to upgrading my system. The speakers in the rear doors is a better idea simply because it allows the staging of the sound to be more correct. The woofers are low in front, so they should be on the same plane throughout the vehicle. This, i am just saying is the preferred way for the audio staging. This will not make a big difference to most people, except that the high frequencies from the tweeter may seem to be much louder from the rear if they are pointed more directly at your head than the fronts.(this is common due to the speakers being overhead) In this case, the rear hatch would act as a better enclosure for the speakers, and will give you more bass response as well as being close to the proper height. I recomend installing them in the rear hatch, or if at all possible in the rear doors(modifications will be needed) -Chad
The soundbar was a separate piece up to and including 96, after that they were an integrated piece when the 97 remodel happened. While having the speakers in the hatch might give better acoustics in an empty vehicle, my storage box in the rear would block most of the speaker if they were located that low. In my case it's better to have them up higher so they can actually be heard.
The standard set up is one 5.25” speaker in the driver’s and passenger’s doors and two in the rear hatch. There was a factory upgraded version that added two more 5.25” speakers in a sound bar and or Jenson speakers instead of Mopar. On the earlier models (’90 to ‘96?) the sound bar is a separate piece. On the newer models (‘96 or ‘97 and up) the sound bar was integrated into the headliner as one piece. I took a sound bar off of a ’93, changed the speakers and put it in my ’91. It was a piece of cake to put in and looks stock. RichP is right, the factory speakers suck pretty bad. I replace the ones in my sound bar and rear hatch with Pioneer 5.25” 2 ways. Not the best, but they sound considerably better than the factory ones and they are dirt cheap from Wal-Mart. BTW you can fit a pair of 4” x 6” in the hatch, but 6” x 9” are out of the question unless you plan on doing some serious cutting and reglassing/bondo.
Or you can get enclosures and put 6x9 in the rear cargo deck. I have those and a 10" sub between them. Plus my 5.25" in the front door panels. The system sound awesome with no rattles which is a must for myself. I went all infinity's between E-bay and the pawn shops I have about $1000 worth of system for about $275. So far so good and the clarity and bass are perfect for my taste. Just another option to consider.
Good Luck !
Right now, I have the stocks in the front, and 2-way pioneers in the rear doors, just they don't have anything to let the sound out of (They are jsut installed behind the door panel) I was considering moving them becasue everyone kicks the doors where the speaker gril would go due to the doors being so small. I think I would like the sound of the soundbar, becasue my friend has a honda passport that has the speaker protruding out of the sides in the cargo area, and I like the sound of it. I'm not to concerned about the bass, becasueI was thinking about putting some subs in somewhere and using some crossovers. (The problem is though I need my cargo space [drummer], so if someone knows of a good out-of-the-way sub spot in the cherokee lemme know please)
I'm pretty sure it will. The ends of the sound bar are held up by the trim that holds up the head liner. It also has the rear dome light in it & is supported in the center by pins in the light. I don't know if the pins in yours will be long enough with the sound bar. Might have to rig something up. HTH. JIM.
Forgot to dnload the image from the camera, but this should give you an idea what the soundbar looks like. As the other Jim said, the trim holds it up along with a pair of spring-loaded pins in the light assembly. My switch melted so I added a new one at the rear of the light assembly.
