Rear Main

Limped into St. louis late last night and have a few issues with my Jeep. After fixing the idler pulley and some other small stuff, I am know looking at what I believe is a rear main leak and a leak out of the front output shaft of the TC. So far I've been working on this on a side street in University City. I am taking it to a friends house at lunch so I can work in his garage. He is in St. Charles (right by Bass Pro). Reuther Jeep wants 550 for a rear main. It would be nice to save the dough. I made an appointment for Monday morning just in case I decide I can't tackle this job. I spoke with Lawn Cher' already and he is going to be able to drop by later on and take a look and see if he calls rear main. Anyone feel like doing some rear main charity help? I'll get the beer and food.

Good luck. I'm too far out to help you. You should just see if Mark has a spare drivetrain handy. Tell him to dig in the pile of jeep parts.

If the leak is really bad, don't rule out an oil pan gasket. I thought I had a bad rear main on the engine I swapped in, but turns out I cut the gasket when I installed the pan. You might get lucky when you take that pan off and find the gasket screwed up.

I'm kinda far to help directly, but I've posted a bunch of advice on doing the rear main - if you haven't yet, it might be worth your time to search up my posts on the subject. Since they also cover oil sump installation (and I've also covered the oil sump gasket separately,) it's something to really think about.

In a couple weeks, I'm going to start writing my "troubleshooting guide," and there will be a section on oil leaks anyhow (since I've also run across a few odd ones...)

i just took a 5 1/2 hour ride with my heep.
I had oil coming from (I belive) the main seal.
I put in some NAPA seal sealant, and two quarts of 10W40.
amazingly, It Worked.
wheeled two and drove back.
never needed to add any more oil.
I can't say if we have the same problem.
just thought I'd chime in.

The big oil leak turned out to be one corner of the pan gasket having been pinched upon installation. So, we carefully put a new one in, holding it in place with RTV. Problem solved, and a nice way to spend a Friday night.

Chris returned the favor by putting me onto some beautiful trout in Colorado. I'm definitely going back.
