rear main seal, how bad is it really?

That's a great price. Do it! My local guys charge about 430.
I'm doing mine tomorrow night.(diff removed for a regear. I'm cheating a bit)

Here In NY (Nassau County) one guy quoted me $900 & a 2nd guy wanted $1000 :helpme:
That is why I did it myself for the cost of the gasket & seal + a saturday morning :D

Since they are such a good price, I think I will have them do the front seal on the transmission (since its down anyway) and new trans pan gasket as well. Shouldn't come to more than $400 I wouldn't think. Take care of all my leaks and potential leaks all at once so I know I'm good to go.

Doesn't it need to be moved? They didn't tell me this, I just assumed this myself.

Oh OK. Someone had mentioned to me to see about doing the front seal on the trans since it would be easy to get to, that's why I said that.

It wouldn't hurt to see how much extra the shop would charge to do the seals since they'll be in the area anyways.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I'm pushing 197,000 miles and if I'm that close to the seal, might as well just take care of it before it leaks to begin with.

they're probably charge you at least 3 hours more in labor, likely more, to R+R the transmission to get the front seal out since the trans has to come completely out of the jeep to do it. I wouldn't bother unless it's leaking, mine has 282k miles on it and it doesn't leak a drop :D

OK sounds good. I will just ask them to do the pan gasket since that is leaking, along with the rear main.

The job is really not too bad on a 2 wheel drive. If you remove the steering stabilizer and the track bar to body mount, you can swing the steering linkage and track bar forwards and out of the way (use a jack stand to support it). Of course, jack the body up, support on jack stands, remove tires, remove upper shock nuts and let the suspension fall as far as possible. Be sure to read your manual for torque values and silicone location on the new gasket.

While I was in there, I replaced oil pump and oil filter adapter O-ring. The entire job was around 100 bucks. To me what sucked the most about this job was that for all that work, you don't get a lot of positive feedback. Know what I mean? Great, no oil drip after all those hours...but my oil pressure did increase with the new pump.
