So ive been wanting to buy a box for the rear but tuffy boxs were way to much and i couldent find anything cheap, so i started looking around at making my own and after alot of ideas i finaly knew how to make it. So i got around do doing it today and only took me about 4 hours to do. And i got my fire extinguisher mounted to.

Both the front and rear of the box fold open so i can get to it from the back seat or rear. HI lift mounted on top and fire extinguisher is on the left side after the wheel well

Tomorow im going to carpet the hole thing

very nice write up. do you have the measurements for the box? LxWxH? It looks like it fits in there nice and snug. I'm an out of work carpenter and have been itching to break out my circular saw. Might just be a project for next weekend. :rof:

From the back seat to the back its 28" without the doors on its 26.5 Its 24" wide and 9.5" tall. The box is really strong my dad weighs 210 and was able to stand on it without any bowing so it could probley hold more. Its from wheel well to wheel well so it dosent slide sideways and its really snug. I need to figure out how im going to tie it down and i still need to beef up the mounts for the high lift so it cant pull out of the top.

The frame is made of 2/2 and the rest is made of pressed wood. ith hinges from ace and magetic clips to hold the doors down

Looks good man.

Sandwich the top(MDF) b/w each mount and a piece of steel. That should distribute the forces enough to keep the nuts/washers from pulling through the MDF top. I'd recommend something similar for the hinges too. After some use, those screws WILL start pulling themselves out. Once that happens, it's almost easier to build new pieces than to repair it. Some waterproofing/sealing might not be a bad idea. Wet MDF gets really weak and never recovers, even once it dries.

I'm looking at making one similar for my XJ as well. Although I'm trying to make the supports as thin as possible to allow for wider drawers. I'll prob go with some sort of metal channel framing. I like the one Slee Offroad makes but who can afford $1800.00 for storage drawers?!??

I like his metal trim work though. And the flip up side panels for a little extra hidden storage.

Ya i saw one a land cruiser at the toys for tots but then when i looked at them and saw they were that muhc i was like no way. I wanted to build one like theres but it was to hard. i would like to do drawers but for now its ok. And making it all for under $50, ill keep it till i dont want it lol
