rear bumber 2x4 or 2 x 6

building a new rear bumper and was wondering what size rec tube folks like

rec tube? As in receiver hitch? Mine's a 2x2 class 3 hitch, if that's what you mean.
The depth of the 2x2 hitch receiver is about 6 inches,if that's your question.

I have a 2x4 bumper and it retrospect, I'd built it out of either 2x6 or 3x5.

I built mine out of 2"x6"x3/16" wall tubing. It was too big for my liking, So ill be doing another one out of 2"X4"X3/16" wall, adding to it a receiver for the hitch, so I can get rid of the Drawtite already on there. Its really up to you.

all preference and how your gonna mount it. If your going to build one for aesthetics and just attach it useing the 8 stock bolt holes 2x6 works fine. If you want to tie into the frame rails with angle iron as well 4" is the perfect height for it. Not to say it cant be done that way with 2x6 but 2x4 is easier.

Well thats my bumper and it wasnt built for aesthetics!Now as Paul Harvey always says "now for the rest of the story".Another pic with full 2x2 angle with all 5(per side)reciever mounts,shackle brackets are tripled to 3/4".

I used 3x4. More protection for the back end, but doesn't hang down any further than the rear crossmember. Made it easy to run some flat stock back onto the frame rails.

2x4 and i wouldn't have gone bigger.
