random thoughts -whatchu think ?

been doing some searching on mitsu Montero rear ends for my little bros Xterra :

9.5" ring gear, stock air lockers, 4.56 or 4.90 gears, stock 28, 31 and 34 spline shafts, disc brakes, can be found for 400-800$ from most junkyards and craigslist if you look around.

6 lug, about 59.5" WMS- WMS

Ive found 31 spline ones for around 400$.

itd be interesting to see one under an XJ.

makes me want to grab a 34 spline unit if I can find one for cheap enough.

oh wow thats a killer stock rear end. They do sell adapter spacers for 6-5 lug conversion, or you could get the axles re-drilled depending on what the brake rotor design is.

ya its pretty tempting to grab one and try to slap it under an XJ. that sort of beef with 4.90 gearing and an air locker would kick butt for a 400$ price tag. Huge ring and pinion I guess.

Couple of my friends run these, it's a known swap. They're around d44 strength, with all the upsides you listed, the only real downsides are gear ratio availability. At the price you can get em for (around here they go for 100-200 all the time because our donormobiles rot out from the salt and go to the junkyard with fine drivetrain hardware in em still) I would basically plan on using it as a cheap air locker and set of diff gears until you change ratios, especially since they're available close to 4.56 and 4.88 ratios. Deeper than that, find a 60 or 44.

If I was starting from scratch with a stocker XJ, id grab the 4.90/air locker version and then build a 6 lug HP44 with 4.88s/detroitorgrizzly/RCVs and call it done. that would be a cheap build for sure.

You had me agreeing with you till you said RCVs, I dunno if anything with RCVs in it can be called cheap :roflmao:

Though the savings from the pregeared, prelocked rear would definitely take some of the pain out of the RCVs.

Hmm. That looks like a great idea. I wouldn't mi d finding a 4.90 to match the front I have sitting, assuming I could get it to match wheel patterns somehow.

Yah RCVs would be like a year after the initial build , like on a good tax return year. Not initially, but thats the idea, is saving money on gears and locker in the rear would help build the front.
