Racing MJ's

Allright, Ive heard hear say that they used to race mj's and they did pretty well. Does anybody have any links or pics on these rigs. I'm looking to start planning my street ride and want to do something that is ready to race. I've got some parts laying around for a super low compression 4.0L and a couple of turbos that I thought might be fun.

Here is one:

Come on guys. Someone here has to be able to tell me about them. I can't find any info on them. I know they used the 2.5L and that they won the manufactures prize during thier short run as fully sponsored vehichles, but thats all I could find. What trans, did they use, the ax15? I think it would be sweet to make a replica, but I don't have anything to copy yet.

I am pretty sure that they were campaigned pre Chrysler, so they probably had carbureted I4 engines. If that is the case and extracting the information I know about the Race XJs that were being campaigned at around the same time for offroad racing, then they probably used fabricated aluminum sheetmetal intakes, and Weber carburetors...that was the setup used on the 2.8s raced in that era...400hp tri-webers, dual factory Corvette exhaust!

It was my impression that they raced the 4.0 in something since they used to list what they called a race prepared cylinder head based on the 88-89 casting for the 4.0 in the mopar performance parts catalog. Also, if you read the Jeep Engines book from Mopar the information they give came from building race engines.
There were no listings for any 2.8 performance parts.
I'd guess they used the 4.0 in the XJ's, but it's just a reasonable guess base on limited evidence.

Fred, they used 4.0s in the XJs after they went into production. But 84-86 maybe early 87 they used the 2.8. There are a few books out there that cover the race engines used in Jeeps, including the 2.8, I have some listed on my Warrior site.

I don't understand the complete lack of info on these trucks. :(
I spent an hour googling and this is all I found.
Jeep vehicles re-entered the racing scene in 1987 with six fully-sponsored race vehicles in three series. The Archer Brothers in Jeep Comanche trucks won the Manufacturer's Championship in the SCCA Racetruck Challenge, while Mike Lesle added a second Comanche championship in HDRA/Score Desert Racing Series.
I would really like to find tech specs on how they were modified.

A few years ago..no many years ago, I contacted the Archer brothers as well as Curt LeDuc, seeking information on the fenders and aero kits they used on the competiton vechicles, they were very helpful, maybe you can go to the source as well.

I'm not at home, so can't give details, but I have a book published by Mopar around 1991 on tuning XJ's and MJ's for performance, with references to the special parts, etc. for the different engines (pre-91 Renix). They had hot cams, modified Renix computers, competition heads, and all sorts of nifty stuff. There are some pictures at the beginning of the book of some of the hot MJ's that they campaigned. I'll look a little closer at it when I get home Monday.

I did a buch more digging and I am fairly certain they used the 2.5L I4. They entered the SCCA in '87 so that should be TBI right? Does anybody know what kind of suspension they ran? I wonder if they ran a tanua cover? I wonder how many ponies they got the 4banger to pump out.

Duuude! That comanche is so bad ass! It would be so cool to have my lifted XJ for the rocks and a lowered NASCAR wannabe comanche to go hunting for Hondas:cool:

maybe check out the Street & Performance forum?

I don't know specifics on these SCCA Craftsman MJs but since they were 'spec class' vehicles, I bet there wasn't much rocket science involved in the chassis. Probably a lot of trial & error tech going on though, especially within the top running teams.

Probably something like good quality shocks, firm bushings, stiffer springs, top shelf brakes, gummy tires... nothing one couldn't replicate or exceed these days, using OEM, used or aftermarket parts...

I'm home again, and the book I mentioned is called "JEEP ENGINES - Speed Secrets and Racing Modifications for Jeep-Built 4, 6, and V8 Engines." It was Mopar Part # P4529529, with a 1990 copyright date. It includes chapters on Jeep History, 2.5 engine, 2.46 engine, 4.0 engine, 4.2 engine, 5.9 engine, "Racing your Jeep," and an Addition Info. chapter listing additional resources.

The Racing chapter includes some details on the racing Comanches, including specs. The Craftsman Comanche chassis were standard except for fiberglass fenders and hoods. In addition, the frames were plated and filled with urethane (!!!!) to prevent them from breaking up under stress The 4 cylinder engines were bored out to 3 liters, putting out 230 horsepower at 6500, using a Holley 4-barrel carburetor. They used a Chrysler 904 Torqueflite transmission, the stock item, but of course all rebuilt and modified. The race weight of one of these things was 3900 pounds.

There are also details on the Archer Bros. oval track Comanches, which were 2WD, and used the standard 2.5 engine with TBI, with hand-selected and matched production parts. They used the stock 5-speed transmission, and (for weight reasons) a Dana 35 rear axle rather than a 44. They used an aluminum driveshaft, not only for weight but safety (won't punch through the floor when it breaks). Lotsa brake and chassis mods, extensive roll cages, etc. of course, but basically not too far from stock. They weighed in at 2920 lbs.

Well anyway, there's far too much else to detail here, but the book is fun to browse in.

Urethane!? Wow and all this time I have been peddling the idea as just sound deadening, who would have thought. I guess every little bit helps.

I have a good friend who rode shotgun in the Comanche for the 1987 Class-7 Baja 1000 win. I think it was also a 2.5L, and it was built in Walker Evans fab shop.

I'll ask the next time I talk to him (possibly this weekend), as he may know where the MJ sits (most old race trucks have a short competition life and then become yard furniture).
