is a snatch strap the same thing as a recovery strap? i read up on it and it seems that a snatch strap has more elasticity? also, are the end loops the same?

i can buy this snatch strap for really cheap from a friend and i want to make sure i can just use it for basic recovery (not using a snatch block)

A snatch strap is designed to stretch, a lot.

You hook it up, floor it, and when it stretches all the way out, it adds its elasticity and the weight of your rig to the pulling power of your engine, to pull a LOT harder.

Its not very good for towing, but for a hard pull (out of mud or sand, for example) it will do a lot more.

Its also noted, if things go wrong, it will do a lot more damage. ;)

ARB Snatch straps are great.... machine washable, and lifetime warrenty..

Im sure that the arb one is sweet, but you can get a tow strap (no streachy) for 20 bucks at walmart, 20 feet long, rated at 30,000 lbs. If I had the money I would probobly get a masterpull snatch strap.

If i had a dollar for every one of those that I have seen break I would be able to buy any recovery strap.

1) I read the title wrong at first and ws wondering how this was not in the den

2) anybody ever use the straps that have all the extra loops in them so you can weave them together or around a tree? I keep seeing those and wonder how durable they are

ok thanks guys. i just wanted to make sure a snatch strap isnt just for snatch block use

A snatch strap ISN'T for snatch block use. You should not use it as a tree saver or when using a snatch block, you should only use a strap that will not stretch in those situations.

I've had good luck with a tractor strap rated at 60,000 lbs. Pick them up at a hardware or tractor store for a little more than at a 4x shop and they wont break...ever.

thats my pull strap, 30 ft /35k from TSC, sucker is 6 inches wide and half an inch think

Ben, did you get yours at Tractor Supply?

Good to hear from you!!

You to Dean. I got it at Cuesta Equipment in Santa Maria about five years ago. I want to say it was around $60 for a 20'x.75"x6" strap. I originally got it to move some really big boulders. Any tractor store will have something comparable, I'm sure. Sure beats replacing those wimpy straps.

If you want something to be able to yank on people without hurting your vehicle you will want a kinetic tow rope, not a tow strap or snatch strap or whatever you guys are calling them. I have used both, and a kinetic tow rope is the better way to go. It also helps if you get free ones from work. :)

Alex, part of selling your product is knowing what else is out there and what it's called. ;) Your 'kinetic tow rope' is the same thing as a snatch/stretch/recovery strap. They're all elastic as Cal described. Non-stretch straps are for towing, winch extensions, and tree savers. I've explained these before on here and have referred to the ARB website for the distinctions:

"Specifically designed to stretch under load for maximum performance, an ARB snatch strap (sometimes referred to as a tow strap) is a very effective method of extracting a bogged or immobilized 4WD when a second vehicle is present.

This ability to stretch is a distinction between a snatch strap and a tow strap, ARB snatch straps are elastic when under load whereas a tow strap is not, the benefits of which are twofold. Firstly, the kinetic energy generated by the elasticity actually aids the recovery itself, and secondly, the elasticity greatly reduces the likelihood of vehicle damage during recovery. The enormous weight of each 4x4 and the weighted force of whatever caused the immobilization puts enormous strain on the point where the straps are attached, and without some elasticity, there is a substantial risk of damaging the vehicle. For vehicle recovery, a snatch strap is more suitable than a tow strap."

BenH, thanks for the hint. I am going to the mountains this weekend, and will make a stop at Tractor Supply to see what they have. Hope to see you this summer on the trails!!

Take good care.party1:

An ARB or any other snatch strap will not stretch as much as ours, come wheeling and I will show you. ;)

-Alex

So the ARB one doesn't work? I guess I missed your point. :) I have $40 Fiberlink straps on the shelf that I've been selling for years...and they work just fine. Come wheeling and I will show you. :)

They work, but you can bury your jeep up to the windows in snow, take a running yank on it with a kinetic rope and you it will feel very smooth. Try that with an ARB or snatch strap. I said they will not stretch as much, I never said they would not stretch at all.:)

Buried up to my windows I'd exercise prudence and utilize my winch. :)
