I know CJ stands for "Civilian Jeep" But what the hell does XJ stand for? Anyone know? Just kinda wondering that today

Supposedly, "XJ" stands for "eXperimental Jeep", but that is probably apocrypha. Most of the "nJ" designators son't seem to mean much of anything, although "FSJ" is thought to mean "Full-Size Jeep", and the "J-Series" truck was probably an answer to the "F-Series" by Ford and the "C/K-Series" from Chevvy. Apart from that, it's anyone's guess. I don't remember seeing anything that really answers this in any of my Jeep books anywhere...

Lemme guess - clear as mud now, right?

I know some of the nJ designations had a meaning. The DJ (2-wheel drive version of the CJ) was called the "dispatcher," for example, and the cab-over FC series stood for "forward control." I have a feeling some of the others were just pulled out of the air, though. I also thought that the FSJ was properly designated SJ, but could be wrong about that.

You know, I was never really sure there was a true connexion between "Dispatcher" and "DJ" - but I've been wrong before!

I'm still tempted to think a lot of the designations were rather arbitrary, and I'd be more interested in confirming the rumour that there's been a Renix 4.0 running in Ohio/Michigan for about 20 years - a little more interesting to me personally anyhow... I don't suppose you've any info on that? I think you were at least tangentially involved in that thread 'way back when.

I don't suppose there's anyone around Toledo or Flint that might be interested in looking into this?
