Questions about registering a vehicle out of state???

So I'm getting ready to lease a new vehicle (but still keeping the xj of course). My drivers license, voter registration and current insurance are all in Colorado, however my parents live in New Mexico.

My question is has anybody ever used an out a state address to register an new vehicle, and did you run into any problems? New Mexico is one of the cheapest states register a new vehicle in, if I were to register it in NM it would save me about $800.

Now before anybody jumps on me, I'm only asking because if its simple to do, it might be an easy way to save a little cash. I had fully planned on, and budgeted for, Colorado sales tax before my Dad told me it might be an easy way to save a little on a new car.

UNLESS, you are military stationed in Colorado. I'm not sure, but I think out of state student (paying higher tuiton rates?) may also be exempt.

I've heard of people registering vehicles at vacation home addresses and such and my first thought was it might be simple as just using an address but the more I think about it the more I realize the obvious answer.

I really didn't want ugly yellow New Mexico plates anyways.

UNLESS, you are military stationed in Colorado.

IIRC, you can only register the vehicle in your State (Home of Record). So unless you declare residency in N.M......illegal.

Again, (IIRC) You'll then be required to pay income tax as a part time resident in the state you register your vehicle in.

Not worth the risk. Colorado is really tough on out of state registrations. They only give you something like 10 days to register. While I worked at HP, the cops would cruise the parking lot and give tickets. If you work in Colorado you have to have Colorado license and registration.

Not gonna register it in my parents name. Like I said I had fully planned on registering it up here but thought this was worth looking it to since it could have potentially saved me some money.
