M2 fifties would tear right through the plastic hull, and unless you hit the machinery or the personnel the boat would just keep coming.
Jeepin Coastie find some video from a 378 or 270 down in CARIB that used them on a Go-Fast and you'll see what I mean, the splashes on the far side of the Go-Fast are not from misses. The M-240 on those clown boats should be replaced with a M-19 and flucette (sic) rounds. Less effective range = less collateral damage.
The sea whiz would work, but during the Tanker Wars of the late 80's it was cluster bombs dropped by Intruders that put the hurt on the Iranians. But seeing an AC-130 in action would be cool.
Yeah, using solid pills against soft targets comes out to be a bit worse than useless.
One guy with a M79, or a depth charge with a short fuse, should work to break the boat's back and take care of things. No need to get silly...
I'm not even sure flechettes would do any real good - probably better off with a beehive round (flechettes are usually loaded in a single cluster, no? While a beehive just uses a good handful of ball bearings? You'd get more area penetration on those silly little boats, and have a better chance at blowing a large hole in them.)
But, I think M79 would be about best. You could either drop one in the boat proper, or lead your target and break its back from underneath. Aren't there sharks in them thar waters?
For handling future incidents like this, it's simple. Tell Iran that we're not going to deal with it anymore, and anything steaming toward us without giving intentions, hailing, or slowing down to a "friendly" approach speed will be assumed to be hostile, and handled accordingly. "Copy, we are 'weapons free'."
