so i should put the front pieace of the driveshaft in place with the nut to the pinion and test it?

which would explain why my current problem started after the diveshaft fell off.
is there no cotter pin or anything else to hold it in place?

and i guess my gears werent broken, untill i drove a while in reverse a bunch...
this is still cheaper and easier than doing ball joints and hubs.
and now i got a high pinion, which will hopefully help with the vibes.

On a side note, I have seen a couple guides that say to jack up your xj on your crossmember, now i have a bent crossmember. At least now I can justify and upgrade.

yes drove without it, no bmw, and with the yoke on the new one all is well.
That is the piece of information i needed.


How hard should i torque the nut though, should i do a quarter turn after its to the point where its not pulling the pinion in anymore?

And yes, there were lots of snaps. Will pull it apart tomorrow and post some pics for educational purposes.

Still, if this didn't happen, I would probably be doing ball joints and hubs.

So theres nothings thats supposed to be anything holding that nut in place? No pin, not one of those shields like on the axle shaft on the 36mm nut?

ummm, already got a new one, thats kind of what this post is about, theres even pictures.

"adjust to 10 to 20 inch pounds turning torque" means im not sure what. Would appreciate an explanation.

Perhaps the post is misleading here's a recap.

2000xj lpd30
plowing for 7 years, balljoints->gone, bearings->gone, the nut came off(pinion to shaft thing), drove some more.
Got a 99 hpd30 for 200 with fine looking hubs and balljoints, seems solid as a rock. Got most of old stuff pulled out, going to put new on in in the morning.
Are there things I should do(maintenance) on this axle i just got from the junk yard? Im probably just gonna top it off with some fluid and call it a day.

So are the axle shafts interchangeable between the low and high pinion d30s?
What is a good budget option for sway bar links with 3 inch spring lift, it had stock ones(which are now broken) and clearly they did not belong.

lower sway bar link bolt was a pain, definitely required a bit of persuasion.

p.s. dont mind the air shocks, they work to elevate the front when the plow is on, but that's about all there good for.

Not on the HP. It uses shims, not a crush sleeve. On that axle 160 is the final torque.

No, that means 160 ft lbs, not some random torque from a breaker bar.
 
I've always done everything by hand, i got a good feel for it. Around 160 the nut doesn't want to go anymore. It's a noticeable feel. I put some blue loctite on it.
