Proposed closure of 200+ CA State Parks! *URGENT*

Please read the email that I just received (below). Then please follow the link and give them a piece of your mind!

Dear Billy,

Here we go again! Last year, you were one of more than 50,000 Californians who supported the Save Our State Parks campaign and helped stopped the closure of 48 state parks. I’m writing to you because we need your help again, and urgently.

Just this week, the Governor announced a new proposal to eliminate state funding for our state park system – which will close over 200 state parks. His proposal to cut $143 million from our state parks is 10 times worse than last year's proposal. CSPF is kicking off the Save Our State Parks campaign again, and we need your help to take action TODAY and tell the Governor and your state legislators that gutting funding to state parks is unacceptable.

Next Tuesday, June 2, the Legislature's Budget Conference Committee will consider this proposal. Right now, state park advocates need to make their voices heard and your contact to your legislators is critical. Please take action TODAY and tell them to reject the proposal and save our state parks.

With your help, CSPF will be leading the fight against this proposal to make sure that all state parks stay open and funded. Thank you for your help and please pass this message along to your friends and other park supporters for their action, too.

I'm curious what happens when a state decides to close a state park. Do they just lock the gates and walk away? Do they turn it into something else? Please inform someone not up to speed on California retardation.

They just tried that here and a bunch of local citizens have stepped up to help at the parks, putting in the required hours to maintain them. They contacted the folks who oversee maintenance and put forth the effort. Funds are tight everywhere right now, so they're going to start with the parks, I suppose.

This is the same thing done with the trail cleanups and such.

In a way, it makes sense to close the parks. Around my neck of the woods, almost every state park loses money. It's here only for public enjoyment.

We had our local state park close down for a while a few years back. They simply locked the gates and left. I think they may have mowed and such, but the park was officially closed.

Today's paper stated they plan on closing Anza Borrego State Park.
What the hell does that mean?
Obviously they can't fence off the whole damn place. What they can close can easily be replaced by the local business community. I.E. the campground can be replaced by other RV parks, the information provided by the Visitor Center is already available by the Anza Borrego Foundation store in downtown Borrego Springs. What can not be replaced is the educational opportunities that the State Park provides to visiting schools, the research done here as well as the policing of the park.
I know that my town will step up to the plate to take up as much slack as we can. I wonder how other towns will fair....

The welfare programs are going to be taking a big hit too, and just when we really need them. A lot of good people (not social sponges) are in need of help right now, and we just don't have the means to help....

It does suck.

Down here in Georgia they were going to close Stone Mountain, not a place to wheel but a state park. What they ended up doing was privatize the park nows theres a water park and a bunch of other bs.It really sucks now it cost so much just to drive in to the park. I t used to cost $15 to get in and park and i think $5 to ruide the cable carto the top, now its $25- 30 fpr a pass car then to basicaly get out of the car it cost $25-30. It used to be a good park to take family for picnic and watych lazer show no its cheaper to go to the zoo. lol Just my $.02

I wasn't suggesting that we privatize Anza Borrego State Park.
The thought is that in the short term, the biggest impact out here
would be the loss of park ranger jobs (and the jobs of those who work at
the visitor center.) The services the park provides can
be taken up by our local community.
Anza Borrego park is the largest in the country and my town needs the visitors it attracts. The problem would be if people hear that the park is 'closed' and believe they no longer can visit it. That could be devastating to our local economy.

i think its total BS to close the parks down, but some of the trails ive encountered like last chance canyon in mojave and a few other random roads ive taken were not state parks i dont think. so where some of us wheel it wont be effected... BUT i could be a 100% wrong, and if they close down the parks it looks like i wont be doing my lift or buying mud terrains again... it will go back to as stock as possible so at least i'll be able to save gas... in a sense, closing the parks will trickle down to everyone, it will slow the aftermarket company's down and gas prices... just everything, this state is turning into a communist state, i sure cant wait to move!

I'm not aware of any state ORV parks that will be closed. California ORV parks are funded by our 'Green sticker' registration fees (now red, white and blue!)
But lets say they 'close' Ocotillo Wells, what they would be doing is not manning the park facility, and not fencing it up.

so basically without our help the 4wd community etc, it will just get over run with trash etc? to me thats fine, if i frequent a place and it gets trashed, i'll get a few buddies and go and clean it up as we run thru it yanno? we just gotta take better part in our trails and leave it better than what we ran across. thats just my opinion though

I work for ODSVRA (oceano dunes state vehicular recreatrion area) and we will def not be closing. We take in the most money out of all the OHV parks.

thats for sure, i was telling my parents on a given holiday weekened you bring in over 500K vehicles. and at 10 dollars a pop to get in... you do the math, plus all the day passers and speeding tickets etc... if arnold closed oceano he would kill SLO

ya we have 1,000 campsites and every holiday weekend is sold out for three to four days at $10 a night. Roughly making $40,000 a weekend plus our day use charge of $5 a car. which accounts another $6000 a day between both grand and pier on ramps. We will def not close down, if in the misfortune we did, San luis Obispo county would be in a financial rut for years to come.

Im not saying that i agree with them privatizing the state parks i think it sucks i wish they would have just left them alone

A more recent finacial study shows that the State can not afford to close most of these parks.
I'll look for a copy of the report....
