Project FSJ diesel

i dont reacall...

are you going to take the new axles spring over?

sort of...for the front i have a spring over d44 from a chevy that has the perches at the same width as my spring under 44. the rear is already spring over...BUT...to make the 14 bolt fit, i can either weld new perches on the 14 bolt or i can move the leaf spring mounts directly under the frame rails, which will raise the back about as much as going spring over in the front...so i will be doing that in the rear. then i can just bolt in the 14 bolt

hey all...after a drunken weekend and a few days of work out of town im back at it tomorrow...but looking ahead, can any guys who currently have diesel recommend what gauges i should have in a diesel pickup...my thoughts are this:

tach, speedo, egt gauge, fuel level, water temp, volt meter, oil pressure, boost maybe...

what else would be nice to have? im probably going to have to do most if not all aftermarket gauges since im not sure how many i can make work on the stock cluster...also what brand of gauges do you guys like??

id relocate the perches on the axle. less work/time, and your not stuck UNDER the truck. also, can set pinion angle.

in most cases i would agree with you...the problem is that the perches on a j truck are so far out and the hubs are so big of the 14 bolt they will contact the back of the drums. now when i convert it to disc brakes the backing plates will be just a hair farther out...or i could get rid of the backing plates. there are quite a few guys who are running 14 bolts on j trucks and its about 50/50 what people have done so for now, im still planning on inboarding the springs. once the frame is stripped im going to measure every thing out and decide for sure, but im going to have it welded up while the frame is bare no matter what

still hurting a little from the weekend, but i managed to get a couple of things done...started stripping the front 44 from the chevy, but i gave up for tonight since i don't have a spanner wrench yet. also finally got a hoist from collin...and then this happened

didnt have anywhere to put it...this will do...i knew i left the box on for a reason :)

and then i realized i didn't have the right size star socket to pull the driveshafts...so the transfer case stayed on for tonight :)

more fun tomorrow! going to deliver the tranny to its new owner and hopefully get the transfer case off...anyone need a np208???

The driveshaft has reverse torx?

Or are they just well disguised 12 points?

i cant tell with all the grease on them...Im wondering if they are 12 points actually. I couldn't find a 1/4" 12 point anywhere here in town though. It seems silly to have star head on them. Either way, i didn't have either of those sockets in the shop so I couldn't get them off tonight.

not much exciting today...BUT i did find these:

8 bolt 16" soft 8's...i didn't even know they made them. Im going to re-finish them, but i cant argue with the price the guy is selling them for...so hopefully they will be in my possession tomorrow. i finally got rid of the outlaw 2's i bought back when i though i was going to stick with 6 bolts...

i did get the t-case out after i was reminded that combination wrenches have a 12 point on the back side...sometimes i wonder how i get out of bed in the morning! but they were 1/4" and i couldn't find mine so i had to run to the parts store for one. starting to get close to a bare frame!

managed to get the passenger side torn down...i got the sway bar, drag link and shock off. i did have to cut the eye off the shock with a sawzall since the bolt was frozen in the bushing sleeve, i figured i will deal with it when i put the axle under my xj next year :) you can see the bushing in the pic giving me the evil eye...no pun intended

i also started pulling the box/rear end out...and i found these shocks...is this an air line on these shocks? they are destroyed, i just thought it was interesting.

those are old school air shocks....probably at one time had a line that connected the two and ran to the rear bumper area for filling/deflating.

I GOT A BOOBIE....now i just need to find a set of boobies for it.

i have to make sure the shipping quote isn't outrageous but it should be on its way to me soon!

sean, its going to be a 5 speed so no need. im also curious if i can make any of the stock gauges work. they arent all computer fancy but i guess it depends on the sending units

old school? wtf? I run air shocks on the front and rear.

Air shocks are not old school (well, they are, but they have been modernized and are used in all sorts of current applications), correct. Those particular air shocks are.

i was actually contemplating running some sort of air shocks in the back, but modern versions are pretty pricey. these actually were so bad they had rust holes in the top otherwise i may have tried to re use them.

as for the truck, ive been pretty busy with the concert at the top of the week, a show monday and tuesday and a show tonight and tomorrow so ill be back working on it on sunday. i spent wednesday and thursday tearing down a buddies boat engine only to find the block was ruined and i was trying to get my primary outboard running right yesterday for a fishing outing on monday...but next week is dedicated to finishing the frame on the truck. i will also have a grille on the way! i have the box ready to come off and everything is loose back to the box. the crossmember came out super easy and all the wiring and brake lines have been stripped off. i actually got all of the front leaf bolts off with no fighting so that was very exciting. i put the front axle on hold for a few days because the ball joints are rusted frozen solid but i may actually have a hp front 44 on its way to me. then i just need to decide if i want to save it for my xj or use it for the truck :)

i was pissed because the sand blaster i want to buy has been out of stock the last week or so at harbor freight so hopefully it will be back in stock this week. i just need a buddy to help me lift the dang box off! i need more friends :(

Air shocks are cheaper, but not ideal as Nate mentioned. That said I added a set to the rear of my Suburban just to level it out with a load.

$100/pair.
