Project "Constructive Deconstruction"

i broke'ded muh toy!
There has to be a story!!
long story short? i made it (hill climb) where my roommates blazer couldnt in the fall. ;)

-legal i promise you.
Next time, bring more than one rig with you, Walt. ;)
truth... at the very least, i got to stop letting the woman take the batteries out of my flashlights.. haha, jk.

aside from lighting, i was relatively prepared. didnt have the diff fluid i needed, but had plenty of other substitutes. haha. i was ready to bust open the diff and throw the new shaft in, but once i got it out of the dirty, i noticed the outer seal was FUBAR and the roller bearing was toast, along with the bearing surface. there was no driving it home...

locked up, cleaned up, put out the fire, and walked it to the road. going in with a car hauler now.

invested $50 into a trailer that is well maintained, very reliable, and worth absolutely every penny. :shhh:

grabbing her from the rear was the only option. so it got strapped in and pulled onto the main drag. not ideally loaded but once onto a paved road the Dmax didnt seem to care... so we kept it nice and slow and got her to the wash.

everything else is BFH-fixable... fun time.

its cold out, and the garage is packed full of crap. so i started a little fire in the grill to keep the hands warm and got to work.

this bearing is going to live a VERY short life. this is simply a $20 band aid to get me to class and back. this axle is going to need replacing before i can ever trust it at anything more than 25mph, and even that is pushing it.

just an FYI, if you ever install a lunchbox that uses pins to perform the install... keep them. they also work wonders for removing the locker. also... keep your spiders and thrust washers.

*sigh*

onto the front i guess. everything fell right apart (in the good way) thanks to a liberal coating of anti seize.

so, damage report:
- 29 spline 8.25 shaft
- 8.25 spartan locker
- 8.25 outer bearing and mating surface
- passenger rear shock mount
- long side inner shaft
- 297 U joint
- outer stub shaft
- various bits of body damage

i think thats it?

lol.

I want to see pictures of where you were attempting...

That is a big list of damage there. Sounds like a fun time tho

surprisingly more fun that one would think...

i got off pretty easy considering my only investment was $20 for a bearing and seal, plus the trailer and gas... i did give my buddy a pretty thick wad for letting us take the Dmax (that he had JUST washed :eyes:) for the recovery.

spare axle shafts are not enough, one needs to have bearings as well.

i think it was more of a combination of 35s, 4 people in the vehicle, and 5k rpms.

Did you ever get your oba project done Walt? What kind of air tank did you end up using? Im getting ready to do that project to mine but just trying to figure out which tank to go with.

negative. i planned to just use the tank that came with the compressor.

well... i think ive got my heart set on a 9 inch rear. i just got to find the right one. in the mean time, i was doing my shopping. was looking into UBEs, but they are pricey, but then i stumbled acrossed a set from TMR and said to myself, "i can make that." so i did.
