Project "Constructive Deconstruction"

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

Your tap is 5" long? Think of how long the bolt is, that's how long the tap would need to be to reach through the frame. Even if you could find a tap that long, it's a bad idea to try to do it through the frame. Think of it like this, you couldn't even get a bolt through the frame and threaded correctly; how are you going to get a tap through and threaded correctly? Just take it back off and do it right. It will cost you an extra hour, but you will be happier with the results.

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

it was a thought... im my anger moment with a case of the "phukits".

its the bottom bolt, easiest to get to. i had enough room to swing the box out of the way and thread it in by hand. this is how i came to the conclusion that it was cross threaded. at worste i may have to unbolt the pitman arm and i should have plenty of room to work in there. im not pulling the lines and dropping the whole thing. heck to the naw...

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

JCR bumper is on...

dropped the steering box off of the mounts... got the tap going, all seemed well. bolt went in, started to tighten up, then, "POP!" ffffuuuuuuuuu...... well luckily dan had a bolt on hand and grinding wheel came out. im confident in the fix. when i was packing up i noticed that i had made a mistake. i had bought the taps in a 2 pack. 7/16-14, the same as the steering box bolts, and 1/2-13. i had assumed the bigger one was the correct tap. WRONG... obviously. yay for tard moments. its on, its fixed, its solid, and itll be a PITA next time i have to work on it. but what ever. like i said, i dont see it being a problem:

also removed the fender reinforcement brackets and relocated the horns. not like there was much fender to reinforce. lol. everything is tucked up and away nicely. good day compared to yesterday.

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

my jeep brother... i might be jealous of the bigger rubbers. ha!

and the parts compiling continues. its a bit rough, but for $100 it should do nicely. i still owe a little money on it, but dan was nice enough to let me take it. hes a pretty scary looking guy though, so ill be getting the rest to him shortly. lastara haha. john, warm up the welder!:

shes pretty beat looking. but has everything i need/want. 4.10s, disk, and an open carrier. itll be getting the lunchbox treatment at some point. inside looks a lot better:

this is where ill probably stand until after exams the first week of may. jeep blessing is the 30th (my birthday, so im sure someone will end up paying for me to go to that) and we are trying to head to rocks and valleys the 7th of may. just got to finish the semester strong and find housing for next semester.

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

so after driving to lansing and back... i got fed up with the odd creeks, pops, and noises coming from my rear end. long story short i had a bad Ujoint. by bad, i mean BAD. the needles were no where to be seen. drove around in front wheel drive for a few days which was a total pain in the arse. finally was able to get it replaced (thanks dan) and its smooth as butter again. i wish i had my SYE because that would have gone in. but alas, i left it in lake city. my front shaft was somewhere around 4-6 inches short of fitting for a SYE application when maxed out. but its also shorter than those of the AW4. so ill be picking one of those up, rebuilding it, and if need be getting it lengthened.

ive got fluid all over under the jeep... Tcase was plumb full, i still drained and refilled it. transmission was almost bone dry. the thing just needs to give up so i can get a new one. filled it back up (thanks again dan) and rolled away happy.

also... added a few things to the list. BLUE = new

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

The list never seems to end. I'm still working on my "hope I get it done before WF 2011" list. Which I started in March of 2010.

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

At least it's spring again...

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

man you better change the name of this build lol
im taking suggestions... lol.

At least it's spring again...
dont say that too loud. there were snow flurries last night.

check list for the jeep blessing:
- got rid of the bald 32s, got the 31" claws back on.
- bumper is all bolted on, all 14... it is going NOWHERE
- bought a strap and shackles. cool beans!
- front drive shaft is rebuilt. dont lose the needles out of the centering ball if its not bad. $50 for the little F'er.
- going to grease everything tomorrow morning.
- decided to not take the doors off. another time...

- finally got that oil changed. ha! ive got a good stock pile of extra fluids going now.

also, im thinking of scrapping the 8.8 plan and just finding some 3.55s to throw in. i really would rather go to Va than finish this all this summer. maybe ill hold onto the gears/axles...

:new:
got my rear BPEs installed today. had to do LESS work than i thought. which is a rare pleasure. all 4 bolts came out no problemo. i love having a rust free Va jeep. ive also found the longer ZJ shaft i need for my SYE application at genes auto parts in cadillac. since ill be working there ill pick it up as soon as i have $115 to spare and get that installed. ill remember not to take better care of the centering ball this time. ha!

i had a lock (or so i thought) on a set of brand new moabs and tires. called the guy saturday and said id be coming through town with a trailer and would like to pick them up. guy said he wouldnt be around. i said, "well, im going back to school for exam week and will be coming back through next weekend. can i get them then? cash in hand?" thought we had a plan... get an email today saying they were sold. MOTHER FUUUUUU.....cccccc.....errrrr... oh well, back to the drawing board.

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

went to rocks and valleys for what will probably be my last wheeling trip for a while. its time to start working my arse off, stockpile some more parts, and get the suspension done. some will recognize this rock. we did a little posing session. 2 of the 3 other jeeps are NAXJA users:
230689_171647466223011_100001332774399_353268_7514428_n.jpg

i took a tree root to the fender early on. almost ripped it off before i realized what was happening. it got up in there during a hill climb:
222353_171647499556341_100001332774399_353270_2827477_n.jpg

i then got what i call the "F' its" and decided to really see what the jeep could do. damange was plentiful:

passenger side:
221697_171647522889672_100001332774399_353272_3254860_n.jpg

what i learned:
- im pretty capable for having a stick and open diffs when i dont care for body damage. i was trying things i normally wouldnt and still managed to drive it home.
- i need rocker protection. time for 2x6 replacements.
- i need gears and a locker(s)
- my jeep has 2 speeds, "stopped, and GO." like charlie sheen
- make sure the high lift handle is bolted in before letting it fly and ratchet itself down.

t'was a good time out with the new lady friend though. :)

Re: Project "Spring Semester Of 2011"

i hopped onto my grade book and realized i was rocking almost a 3.0 for the semester. WIN! so i decided to go for a drive from home in lake city to petosky and back. it wasnt a totally worthless trip, these guys followed me home, all 5 of them. cross the duratracks off of the list, im set until next summer:
222604_171647536223004_100001332774399_353273_2370274_n.jpg

WJ steering may now be an option if i can find the parts priced right. ;) but i might have a handle on ZJ steering for cheap, i may just go that route and run new TREs. the tires look fresh, much better than the black and rusty chrome. i started my spring cleaning today too. seats out, good vacuming, shampoo and scrubbing, wet vac, and reinstall. the interior is nice and crispy and smelling nice again. i would have washed the outside, but the forecast is calling for rain. when we get a dry spelll ill tackle some rust prevention and start looking to cut the rockers. im a happy camper, these are the single most desirable wheel for me. ill never let these bitches go.

I've got a 3.73+ ring and pinion for a D30 if you're interested.
