Procedural question - lost account

What I'd do... (and can do if you like) is "FORCE" his new/correct email into the old username.... then manually send him new activation codes. From there he can confirm it and be good to go.

Admins can "force" in a new (set by us) password too, but it expires after a short time... that works best when the user is online and (is ready to) change it from the reset password to one that is secret to them & will not expire.

Sounds like a plan..... that method does insure that he's got access to the right email address and gives him the opportunity in case he's not immediately available.

It does concern me slightly that it's an invalid email address in the original account. It's not the wrong address, the domain doesn't exist.

I think what's most important is that there is not a major shift in policies during the admin changeover.

Yup... I hear ya on maintaining the policy.

I've been the one doing these deals for awhile (GB did do plenty, but if I could get to them first, I'd try to handle them)... and lately they are rare)

What we don't want to do is 'delete' or reassign any usernames that have a history. This cat's new username & few "help me" posts can & should be merged with his old handle & posts... It would be hellish to sort out if a -long dormant- user name with XX old posts got reissued to a newb. (reassign 'woody' to a newb & watch for sparks?)

Case by case basis... and thankfully not too frequent. Real Dummy's I prefer to talk through on land line as I fix them up... takes less time than back & forth on PMs or forums usually. Kinda like tech support anywhere, but instead of an Indian cat using the name Jake (instead of Jambeebi) one gets a Real Ugly American...

And that is part of my concern, that he's not taking over a dormant name. I don't think he is, but that goofy email address stinks on ice. I'm wondering if that email address was munged on purpose by an admin here.

I dunno Jeff, speaking for myself, I tend to limit my admin pranks to changing users profile info (usually the user title and/or signature line to something 'clever') And I don't even do that very often... good thing too, or you'd all be "Blue Gummed Mackakas" or "Fudge Packing Flamers" etc...

If someones FUBAR, it's more appropriate to ban them outright, than to mess with them.

In this case (I looked at that email, and it is indeed odd) I'd just merge the two users & be done with it. If "JasonXJ" was a troll, he'd no doubt be banned already.

That address almost smells like a corruption issue, or someone purposefully screwing it up. It's not just a simple typo.

I doubt it was changed by an admin. That may have been when we had phpbb for the chapters and he signed up then? 2002/2003 was when we did a mass change over, so I doubt it is conspiracy related. :)
