LOL. gut you're hatch, even weak struts are plenty for a fiberglass hatch.

dead hatch struts make the jeep feel ghetto imho.

Yep, that's why I spent the $20 and 5 minutes on putting new ones in on mine.

Look at the ROTM. I love his idea of doing the typical racer mount (he is a racer after all) while cutting the hatch to fit over it. Once my XJ gets moving on getting caged, I plan on copying it.
BTW, the rig to which I am referring is Loose-Nuts prerunner.

Yep, that's a sweet setup. For a DD/serious go-fast toy, I could see either making a rubber "boot" to seal the area around the spare, or an aluminum cover to go over the spare that seals to the cut-out hatch. That is one sweet rig,...

That's what I was leaning towards, like a fat rubber gasket. I feel stupid having seen his cuz I was going to do it standing vertically like a lot do with no hatch, but didn't want to have to make a plexiglass window notched to fit...Duh!!!Lay it horizontally, it'll fit with no window mods!

im also a fan of cutting the back hatch, Ill built this tire carrier off of a swing out LOD bumper.
I would have put mine more in the back cab area but im already low on storage space being in a TJ.

its out for the long haul trips where i need spares, but i can still run it fine. even with the harness bar behind the front seats there actually still room back there. Tone my buddy saw your pics and is lookin getting something bent up close to urs. his concern was the smell of tire in the cab. do you get that at all?

Every XJ running started out with the spare in the passenger compartment. Most of us still have them there. Personal experience: When I got new tires, the new spare smelled like rubber inside the cabin for about a week. 'Wasn't a problem before, hasn't been since.

Lol mike. The smell isn't that bad only on really hot days when it sits parked/windows up is when I notice it.. Other then that there really isn't a smell

That's probably a good thing, on the spindle mounted ones that always seems to be the weak point. I've seen 3 of them snap right off during mild speed runs. Only 1 was on an XJ, but still the same principle. That much weight hanging so far behind the rear axle really puts a lot of stress on the mounts. I like that setup you've got there ktm :thumbup:

glad i saw this thread, I like to think I know what I'm doing... but well, lets just say this almost became a major oversight on my wannabe jeepspeed. thanks naxja you saved me from myself once again.
