please read this one and any help/advice thanks

I had to look in your profile. The current heep is a 1990?

The auto tranny is shifted electronically, the TCU is behind the passenger side lower dash. The tranny problem could be something so simple as a broken wire or dirty connector. Good things to look at first.

The axle is a different can of worms.

Neutral Safety Switch.

Searching here or visiting http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/ will get you the info you need about servicing the NSS.

Replied in the original thread.

Sorry to hear about the problem!! Now I know why you were not at NTRIII. Do like everyone has suggested and hopefully you will be back on the road. I just had issues like yours never did pin point the problem, just went away.............. ECM probably but not sure...:dunno:

thaks guys....
well ill be gettin another rear axle just in case something with rear end goes arie again but the mechanic at my shope is gonna put axle back together for be for a case a beer (whew!)

and he is trying to figure out whats up with my transmition as well....got some additives for it to see if those help me get it up the mountain to the shop to get it sorted out...

Additives? WTF?

How's some junk in a bottle gonna help it shift?

Keep that silly shit outta your slush box until you get it looked at.

lol....he just wants to see if it will let me make it up to woody P from the springs in other gears lol...so we CAN get it sorted out....

if its the NSS...would it still engage the P N R D from a stop perfectly fine?...

OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH...
i have some researching/work to do...
i read that write up YELLA linked to..and the connector is in the motor compartment...i know mine(motor compartment) is SUPER dirty in there....can you just pull that plug apart and clean that to see if it helps THEN if needed pull apart and clean piece on the tranny?

no wories frank i am going to try and take a look at my NSS...lol...i AM listenin...just no time yet/...doing axle swap and then tryin to look at tranny tonight..(work again tomorrow..so much for day off...)

but i jsut found something...
hose.jpg

there was a hose/line hangin from my jeep....fell around the cross member...it was really dry and cracked and thats about right when the jeep started this stupid nop shift crap...is there any relavant vacuum lines/hoses on outside of tranny that could cause some issues too?

any pics of tanyy and or vaccum lines would be great if ya have any..im searchin too.....thanks

Nope, the AW4 doesn't use vacuum to control any part of it. Now, the transfer case does on most models - there's 4 colored plastic lines that run between the transfer case and the front disco vacuum unit to control when the axle connects/disconnects.

What it looks like from the pic to me is that your t-case breather hose came off of the metal hook-shaped tube that is usually bolted to the transmission bellhousing on the high pass. side right near where the dipstick runs down. That won't affect transmission shifting or performance. I imagine if you get under the XJ you'll be able to follow that hose to the top of the t-case on the driver's side.

i feel dumb everytime i talk to you guys...you know so much!!!!!!!!!!
but i do appreciate it...
well damn...
ya i have a haynes or chiltons manual but it doesnt seem to have much of antyign in it (or i just dont know how to use it)
thanks tho guys...got new axle in tonight...work again tomorrow...maybe at some point ill be able to tear into tranny problem...i need to get a DD so i can just beat this and not worry about it lol

well i did the NSS thing...got it all spotless and pretty and reinstalled.........and nothing...
still same thing....no upshift....stills falls to idle when not in the throttle....
only difference is now drive is a lil harder to find...i have to go a lil past the indicator position.....how is the adjustment supposed to work?....move the NSS or the shaft that sticks out the tranny?!.....
