Pismo and the stroker

I spent the day Saturday at the Oceano Dunes, and that stroker is sure nice. :)

I drove the Jeep over there to get a good test on the new motor before the Fordyce/Rubicon trip, and everything works fine. What a difference the motor makes on the highway. Probably the best example is a situation on the way home. I was on Hwy 166 near Cuyama and came up on a line of about 10 vehicles behind a semi truck. This was the last stretch of straight road before an uphill curvy section and I couldn't figure out why none of the morons where passing the truck. I had room to pass so I passed half of the cars, then when nobody would pass the truck I went ahead and passed all the rest of them and the truck. There's NO WAY I could have done that with the old motor.

Out in the dunes it was a blast. Other than real tall dunes with a very sharp dip at the bottom I could climb everything. Later in the day I was making one last cruise through the dunes before heading home and I meet another guy I knew from Bakersfield with a nice 'Cruiser, which he had just put an LT1 into. He, like me at the time, was just cruising around having fun in 2wd. So, we started playing follow the leader climbing dunes in 2wd. That XJ with the 4.6L climbed everything in 2wd that the hot V8 powered 'Cruiser did........we had a blast, and I was surprised at how well the XJ climbed in 2wd. The stroker never bogged down, it just revved and pulled, and I only used high range. I used low range one time when pulling a stuck Toy truck out of a big hole because I didn't want to overheat the tranny. The motor got a good workout, with lots of full throttle/high rev action.

I wouldn't go to the dunes real often, but once in a while is a lot of fun. We'd have a real good time with a bunch of XJ's over there for a weekend. Any one interested in a Pismo XJ run sometime?

Glad to hear the new engine is working out, I guess Andy got his figured out as well. Damn I'm jealous, now you guys are going to smoke me in the desert! :)
Haven't done much sand running in the past but it looks like a fun time. I know Matt and Jeni head out to Oceano every once in a while, maybe we can put something together this fall?

Good to hear your stroker is performing how you wanted, and nice pic of your rid in JP Richard!!! How much do you into it? My motor has 205K miles, but still runs and doesn't smoke. How much more would the stroker me over just a plain jane rebuild. I figure that if I need to have it rebuilt in the near future, I should take the time/$ to make it better than stock. I want to shoot for around 230-250 hp/300 ft/lbs. The guy in Saudi who knows alot about 4.0L's says that a 4.5L stroker kit is the least exp and still gives about 230-240 hp or so. Is is any harder smogging a stroked 4.5 or 4.6L here in Cali? I still have to get my 95' 4.3L chevy vortec cpi motor smogged in my 94' yj.

I too popped my cherry this weekend, Richard. Billy and I messed around at Prairie City today and had a blast. The front works awesome, great flex and stuff with the 38s. The back needs more breaking in and some re-work on the shocks otherwise all is well for Marni, Emma and I attending the SC NAXJA run. I am going to run up to fordyce with a friends club and help on one of the Sierra Trek winch hills this week. If felt soooooo good wheeling again and all my new-found torque reduction gave me major wood.

Now to get to that spare 4.0 I have on the stand at home....

What ended up being the problem with the motors Richard & Andy?

Mine was an injector. I had replaced one injector, but I got the wrong cylinder.....it was number 5 and I had changed number 4. I'm very glad it was something simple and not internal.

Andy's was missing a plug in an oil galley under the timing cover. Unfortunately, he had already replaced the high volume pump with a stock pump before he figured it out.

Well, I sort of cheated. I bought an XJ that had a stroker in it already for $600. I'll use the AW4 and 231 to one day make my MJ 4wd, so I figure I got the motor for $300. The motor has 20k on it and was built by Jake's, but I wanted a different cam, so I installed the Crane 753901 cam that is so highly recommended for these motors, with new lifters and Mopar Performance valve springs. With the new stuff that I put on, plus gaskets, new head bolts, and other misc stuff, I'm in it around $1000.

It has stock pistons, and so roughly 10 to 1 compression, a bored out Renix throttle body with cone filter, a Clifford header with 2.5" exhaust and Dynaflow muffler (no cat), and later model Jeep injectors with a 49 psi FPR. This should be about 250 hp and 325 lb/ft of torque. Not too bad for what I have invested......I got lucky. :)

I used to love going to the dunes, I want back, especially with the new motor.

Wow :scared: that's 1 heck of a deal on your xj with the stocker already in it. Do you know how much a stroker 4.6L like yours would be if you were at the point where a 91' could use a rebuild in the near future? I don't know that much about motors so I would need to have it done somewhere at a machine shop or so.
