Pioneer Aux volume control problem

I have a Pioneer DEH-P7400MP deck and have been having a problem. I have a cable that goes from the two RCA jacks in the back to a headphone plug that goes right into my MP3 unit. The thing is I can only control the volume from the MP3. The dial on the head unit does not do anything (but if turned to zero, the sound turns off). I can barely hear the damn thing if driving! Does anybody know how to make it so I can use the volume control on the head unit?

Now I have heard two things that might have something to do with this:
My buddy told me that if I got an amp and hooked up the MP3 player to that, I would be able to control the volume to the amp and therefore, the MP3 player volume.
Also, I am aware that this unit has "External unit control via 2 IP-Bus." Supposedly you can buy an IP-Bus cable with with a phone lead on the end but will that solve my problem? :helpme:

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I bet there is a switch on the back of the unit such as on my Alpine. I bought the POS Ipod control for it, only to scrap it and use a RCA cable.

It looks to be very similar feature wise, so I would assume it is a pain to configure?

Maybe you overlooked a loudness setting?

Does it have to have the Aux turned on like some hi end home theater stuff? They do this to try to defeat electronic noise.

Do you have either of these input devices ? Auxiliary Input (CD-RB10 or CD-RB20 required. I found the specs for your unit online.

It could also be your source level adjustment.

Maybe you have the Aux. in connected to one of the pre-amp outs?

I bet you need the adapter though. Crutchfield sells it for $30.00

Adding a power amplifier to your head unit will cause problems. They areonly designed to handle so much power the unit will start clipping to protect itself and sound like doodoo if you go to far.

Nice unit with a sweet display!

Silly question but...did you hook it up to the RCA outputs for subs? If you buy that cable, that will give you inputs, which is what you need.
I hooked it up to the RCA inputs for auxilary sources ie MP3, DVD, gaming system, etc.

are you positive of that?
I had a friend that thought the preamps were aux inputs and it did the exact same thing on a JVC headunit.
if this is the unit

then it does not list aux inputs, so you likely have to buy the cable.
It does however list two sets of preamps, so I really think that you've got it hooked up to preamp outputs.

See, Pioneers don't come with RCA inputs...even now. I just went through this about a week ago when I got my iPod. You need that cable otherwise I'm almost 99.9% sure you just have outputs. I may be wrong, I just don't think so.

it's not just pioneer, I've got a high end JVC in the MJ and it has a front aux jack, but not rears.
Again, they want me to buy a $20 cable to get rear jacks.

Wow that sucks. I wonder why they wouldn't have real Aux inputs on these "nice" headunits. I assumed it was hooked up to the inputs because there are two sets of RCA's on the back and one set didn't work at all. Anyway I found a good deal on a cable with a gold plated connector here:

I'm ordering it now.

Thanks for all the help fellas
I couldn't believe my Pioneer didn't either. It was a $300 unit like 2 years ago, I was pissed when I asked the guys at Best Buy and they said I needed a $30 cable to get it to work. I ended up trying that for a while, but then I took it back and just got an iTrip. I tend to like the wireless a little better. Good luck with it though, let us know if you have any other questions.

x2, My JVC was a $250 head unit, and it's about a year old, I can't understand why it would have front aux and not rear aux, just tie the rear jacks into the same circuit.
