Pinging like a, well...

I have a 1999 XJ 4.0 that's run just fine since I finished the engine work I did when I bought it. It lives in Mexico most of the time, but I trailered it back to Phoenix for tires and some other work, and noticed it's pinging like mad, especially when it shifts into 4th. Temperature gauge is running right under 200... The purge valve lines are snapped off, so it has a pretty good vacuum leak. Also the fuel (Mexican 87 unleaded) is probably a year and a few months old. It's never done this since reworking the major overheat effects when I bought it 15 years ago. (2 pistons, rings, rod bearings, etc...) Ideas? Might just be the old gas, I suppose.

I would certainly fix the vacuum lines, drain the old fuel and put in fresh fuel before I did anything else.

I had a detonation problem which wound up being an injector issue. Out of balance injectors make it impossible to get the right mixture to all 6 cylinders. That one was solved by sending the injectors out to a refurbisher. And yes, I tried using fuel additives. That made no improvement.

I'm hoping to dump something in the tank to mitigate the fuel issue today... it's only about a year and a half old, and sat in a relatively cool garage the whole time. I had the injectors cleaned/tested back when I first repaired it, about 52000 miles ago. It's always had a slightly rough idle when cool, runs like a Swiss watch once it's heated up... that hasn't changed since I've owned it, so I'm thinking the injectors aren't a big issue. Vacuum lines and octane boost are on the list for today. I'll just have to run the gas through and refill at Costco before I take it back south.
