PCM transplant??

How difficult would it be to replace the PCM in my'96 XJ with a '98 or newer unit? Right now the PCM is the newer style with three seperate connectors going into it. I am trying to get an overhead console to from a '98 year model to work. I think the present PCM do not support the fuel flow / MPG option in the overhead console. Could the present unit be reprogramed?
