OP.. IF it is a V6 and a "chief" then it is pre-87, that t-case was not used in the 87+ XJ's as well.

Yes it is a V6 and yes it is a Chief. And i believe it is either an '88 or an '89 im absolutely positive it isn't '87 or pre '87

Then the V6 is aftermarket. V6 Cherokees were pre87s
