NACFest '03 will be held at Paragon May 30 - June 1.

An events page/forum will be created within the next few weeks. It will be similar to last year's event - guided stock, moderate, hardcore, and totally insane trails. Paragon entry fee of $25 or $30 per day, one time NAXJA event fee of $15 or so. Dinner/Raffle at campground on Saturday night, etc. etc.

Stay tuned.

trail selection

I have a question about which trails each group will be running. I have been to paragon several time, last year at NAXJA fest 02 I ran the easy, or beginner trails. I will have full skids by this year,(front diff, transfer case, engine skid, gas tank skid, and rock rails) but I am still at 3" of lift with no lockers. I think clearance might be an issue if I try to run the moderate trails, but I am looking for a little more challenge than the easy trails. Is it possible to have like a guide for trails between easy and moderate, or should I just take the plunge?

Well, since you've been to Paragon, you know that within their trail ratings (green - easy, blue - moderate, black - hardcore) they also grade 1,2,3. It will be pretty simple to further set up a light moderate (blue 1,2) vs a heavy moderate (blue 3) run.

It certainly depends on how many show up - and what the interests are. Running skids, with proper tow points (a NAXJA requirement), a 3" lift (30/31" tires?) even with open diffs the blue trails are do-able. Of course, we also have an obligation to give everyone a reasonable time on the trail w/o the expectation that a particular rig has to be strapped alot. So, its always a balance between the capabilities and desires of the participants.

No reason why you couldn't challenge yourself some more than you have, you just have to be flexible depending upon the mix of rigs and drivers. And remember, everybody takes a strap every now and then, no shame in that. Also, the weather will affect things as well, add some rain into the mix and even the Green 3's can become a challenge.

I'd say that some form of traction aiding device is necessary for the Black trails, and some more height is highly recommended. As for the RED trails, generally the only requirement there is insanity!

And of course, for all trails, that one elusive requirement - driver skill!

Should be a good time again this year - hope to see you there.

You take your time and when your with the naxja crew you can get through most stuff there, Magoo made it through pick your poison(black or red...I forget) with 33 TSL's, stock LSD, d35, 3.73 gears, and 4.5" of lift. Definitely would not classify as a HIGHLY modified vehicle. Most people would say it's almost impossible (BMJA?), but he made it through almost with no problems except a bead popping off I think. Stroker with 32's also went through wihtout a hitch. Definitely take a trail above the hardcoriness your vehicle has and have fun with it. _nicko_

If you go to the NAXJA home page at www.naxja.org, you should find a link to the by-laws, and the event requirements are buried in the by-laws. Essentially (from memory) the requirements are: front and rear tow points, seat belts for driver and any passengers, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, registration and proof of insurance. CB radio is recommended but not mandatory. FRS/GMRS radios are becoming popular, but are NOT a substitute for CB, which is still what most of us use for vehicle-to-vehicle communication. I don't remember if your own strap is required or not -- check the by-laws. Even if not required, you should have your own, and it must be the type with sewn loops on the end, NOT the type with metal hooks.

There will be a mandatory safety inspection of each vehicle. One of the things we'll be looking at is how the tow points are attached to the chassis.

Let us know if you have other questions before the event site is up.
