painting the roof - rails?

so, I'm seriously considering painting my roof white, to keep the heat down. But there are all those bits & rails & things attached up there to get in the way. What do most of y'all do - just tape 'em off and spray, remove 'em first (shades of broken bolts, Batman!), or what?

Also, any recommendations for a brand/type of rattle can? I doubt they make bedliner in white, so I'm guessing it will have to be regular paint. Rest of it is black, in case you are wondering. :flipoff:

I would paint them and then install them. As for painting them if you plan to use a spraybomb(can), make sure you do a few coats of primer and paint, otherwise there will be rust.

take a look at the "another raptored XJ" thread. painting/lining the roof came up as a bad idea. others with painted and lined roofs say it actually causes more heat.

i suggested maybe a panel or something mounted above the roof. the panel would be painted or lined in white (raptor has a tintable liner so you could tin it white) and would be above the roof. this would allow the panel to reflect heat all while allowing the roof to breath in shade. the roof itself would never even see sunlight. this panel could also act as a "floor" for roof racks.

i dont know... just an idea

so, I'm seriously considering painting my roof white,

in the other thread it stated that someone painted their roof white on a building and there was a significant decrease in temp. reason why painting it with that raptor stuff is a bad idea is because it is black and thick. black absorbs more sunlight = more heat inside the XJ. white would be the opposite.

as far as the hardware on the roof, just put some pb blaster on the bolts and go easy on them. then sand the roof down and paint it.
