What prep work needs to be done with the bare metal? I have the paint and self etching primer already do i need any sandpaper or scotchbrite pads. I've never really painted anything metal.

Well I primed/painted/installed mine this last weekend.. (sorry no picks)

I just used lacquer thinner to wipe them down, then primed and painted... I know it'll all prob come off sooner rather than later, but I needed it to get done that day cause I'm busy right up to WF...

I would use like 320-400 grit wet sand paper and wet sand em, then wash with lacquer thinner (or equivalent) prime, and paint...

Primer is the most important thing. I know guys who didn't primer theres and the paint came off after a month from stepping on them.

I personally primed and painted right away, did about 2-3 light coats. Then when I bedlined my Jeep I rolled some bedliner on top of my outer tube, that helped keep the paint from wearing off for about 6 months.

Also, remember to spray touch up paint after wheeling and scratching them up (just clean and sand the spot where the paint scratched off and give it a quick spray). That way it doesnt rust.

lol dont wet sand your bare metal.

clean it w/ thinner or wax and grease remover
sand it
clean it again w/ cleaner
self etch it
if you want you can prime it with primer surface but not absolutely necesary
paint it

I would say the better you can sand it before you prime it the better off. Just remember that it all has to be on there good. You cant have one layer not so good and the rest gorrilla on there. It just dont make no sense.

For sanding something like bare metal on sliders, I would go all the way down to 80 grit. It should give the primer a nice rough surface to bite to. 400 I think is wayyy too fine. That's for wetsanding primer in a BC/CC job.

is that necessary with self etching primer?

Well i know for sure one of my rails will need painted again! I got in a hurry and didn't prep both rails at the same time so the second rail is gonna flake like a mofo! Oh well thats what i get for getting in a hurry!

the rails turned out ok but i'm gonna repaint them when i take them off to patch the rust in the rockers in a few months

When I got my factory skids, gas and front, they came with a black coating on them. I roughed them up with some scothbright pads, used prep-sol to wipe them down, could also use laquer thinner but nothing petroleum based, or even alcohol. Then I used standard red rustoleum rattle paint, 4 coats, left it in the sun so it got pretty warm between coats, spent the whole day. From then on it was just a matter of cleaning up the rock rash and putting another couple of coats on.
I just did my rear tomken bumper this afternoon, been two years, but the rust was busting out in a few places, did a quickie this time, still have some powder coat on there but I used a 200 grit in my drill to get most of it off then hit it with 3 or so coats of Krylon Rust Tough, we'll see.

I just walked out and checked it, it's about 50-60f here and a tad damp out but the finish came out OK, more glossy than I like but thats all that I had handy. It's not real hard yet but should be OK as long as it has a few days to cure in Non freezing weather. The last time I did was 40F and I used a heat gun to warm the bumper up before I painted then used the heat gun to help it dry, sat out there for 50 minutes playing it back and forth.
