Paint Removal from steel bumper

What would be the best route to strip a steel bumper of the exhisting paint to get it down to the metal to sand/primer and re-paint? I've been sanding it but that's taking long... would a heat gun work? I'm looking for a quicker way just to get the paint off... I need to do it cuz the bumper I got from the junk yard has some surface rust on it so I need to get all the paint off... then sand it all off and repaint it.. thanks!
 
That aircraft stuff works well, just stripped a rear 80lb bumper for my TJ. Used the spray stuff version. Two warnings, stay up wind when spraying, that stuff hurts and once you start respraying with paint PUT THE SPRAY CAN OF STRIPPER AWAY so you don't accidentally grab it after your 3rd coat of paint and thats all I'm saying about that...
 
Ok cool. I don't have a sand blaster... this aircraft stuff... any idea of what it costs? Sounds like it works wonders...and quick too!

RichP... I take it you've got experience with grabbing the wrong can when you're practically done with your paint job?

I got a pretty nice tubed front bumper/brush guard from the junk yard on saturday... no dents or anything, just some surface rust. And I only got it for $26.50 with a rear rubber cargo boot liner... I couldn't have been more happy. And my wife was pleased! She said I could only buy it if it was $30 or less...And it's not home-made either!
 
X3 on the spray-on paint remover.

I use long chemical gloves,
a respirator,
and goggles when working with that stuff

Any ideas where to get this stuff? Is it sold locally or mostly internet sites? Thanks... I would like to get the bumper down to the metal asap to finish it.

Yea, thats where I picked mine up, they had both the spray and the can.
 
Ok sweet. Any idea of the cost? I'll have to stop by on the way from work. Would one can do the job? It's about 3/4 of a 2 tubed bumper left... Thanks for the info :roll: I was using a putty knife to get some paint off cuz it was chipping already... and sanding... but this will be a lot less time consuming!
 
So I stopped by Autozone on the way home from work yesterday... picked up a can of the airplane paint remover in the spray can... $8 make you holla... so I start spraying it on the bumper... the can says it will start to bubble after 10 minutes... After about 1 minute I start to see it fizzle and bubble... that stuff is amazing!! As long as you put on a moderate coat the paint comes off soooo easy! It definately saves a ton of time having to sand down the paint... and it even eats through the surface rust...

My bumper will get done a lot quicker now thanks! :scottm:

Just remember, put the can away BEFORE you start painting.... :D
 
hahahaha RichP.... the can will be long gone when I start painting... It took the whole can to do the bumper... so no more paint remover in a can left. No worries :dunce:
