Pain and Damage

A few weeks back I was at Azusa Canyon ready for some mud. As normal for a Saturday, when I pulled up to the end of the area there were several trucks buried. So I watch for a few and see two more get stuck trying to get others out. I finally go over to help get them out…

I started by trying to get the stuck helper out who was driving a suburban… I hook up the rope and give it a few tugs. He was moving so I decided to give it one more good yank…

MISTAKE…

I use a 30 ft. 30,000lb procomp strap. I have never had one break with me pulling it. And it didn’t… Something on his hitch broke.

I only heard it… AND felt it. My head was out the window “Ace Ventura” style. I saw a flash of white. My hand went up to the side of my head and it was covered in blood. I touched the side of my head and could feel a small hole. Bout the size of your small finger nail… Not too deep that I could tell… I got out and broke out the first aid kit. With some water and gauss the bleeding stopped in about a minute… and with direct pressure it stopped by itself in 5 minutes… I hopped in the jeep and headed to urgent care just to make sure nothing was lodged in my noggin. The Dr. didn’t find anything but did put in 2 stitches. I still don’t know what hit me…

Damage to the Jeep was:
Destroyed Rear Gate
Broken Front Passenger Window
Broken Wink Mirror
Busted rear speakers…

It took a few weeks, but I got it all repaired…

New Gate – with tinted window – and hey look I have an HO engine now…

New front window and Wink mirror

New rear 6 x 9 speakers… Sweet

New Rules:
I don’t pull out Suburban’s anymore
If I hook up, I hook up with my gear.

so what broke and what hit you? did the stuck guy pay for your new stuff?

I tried pulling a Suburban off a some snow he was high-centered on a couple weeks ago. I was on dry pavement, locked up in low range, aired down, all 4 35" MTRs just spinning on dry pavement. NOTHING. I even gave it a few little jerks. That Suburban was just too much weight for my little 3600 pound MJ to pull.

I think the pin he was using broke... I think it was just a piece of steel...

He offered to pay for the damamge... The Rear Gate was $150 and the window was $35... I think the wink mirror was $20.

That's cool. But there is one thing: beer used to heal the wound and alleviate the pain and suffering: $150

Thanks for the much needed reminder.

Wink Mirror is the full length rear view mirror

Damn man, good thing you got a hard head!

That's why I'm anal about tow points!

Damn man, that could have had a very different ending. Glad your ok.

PS: Looks like your Jeep grew a "raffle rack" sometime during all of that...

Glad you're OK. What's a "wink" mirror?
I use a wink mirror because I had the Passenger mirror ripped off on John Bull and didnt want to put one back on... So the wink takes care of that side... it also makes watching people wheel behind me easier.

thats crazy, glad everything worked out ok in the end..... im shocked the tow strap recoiled like that, i would have given the guy a good beating just out of frustration.

You are insanely lucky.

I also snapped a strap trying to pull a full size truck out of Azusa. Theres no way! We had to high-lift the front axle out of the mud, block the tires and then strap it with 2 cherokees.

Count your blessings dude. :sunshine:
