I am an inspection mechanic in PA and had a friend tell me today that he couldn't pass inspection with heims on his tie rods? Is this true? I looked through the book and can't find any reason why not.....If anyone else has had trouble or knows something I dont let me know...

I know of plenty of Jeeps with heims in the steering that have passed .... that doesn't mean its technically "by the book", but they get passed all the time.

I want to say because they are not DOT approved but don't quote me on that. I am thinking its along the lines of how a true beadlock wheel is not legal for use on the highway but the fake ones are for a different example.

You should tell your buddy to take his rig to your shop to get it inspected. Only makes sense since if you call him your friend that you would know if the rig maintained fairly well.

I did inspect it for him, I just had never heard of this before. I can't find anything in the inspection handbook about it. I called the quality assurance officer and he said "whats a heim joint".......oh well

I have never had a problem with heims on either Jeep... but the same shop has been inspecting my Jeeps for years. It is a sticky point though, I suppose if a shop wanted to make an issue of it they could....

Inspections seem to be more of an issue in "retail chain" shops (like Kost, JackWilliams, Firestone, etc) because of the knowledge of some of their workers. Also has to do with their insurance liability.

Independent shops tend to be a bit more open minded if the said modification is not a hack job. Doesn't mean they will "lick & stick" but a knowledgable tech might actually understand what a heim is ;)
