Overhead Hoist

I've got a short I-beam mounted to the ceiling in my shop, it was there when I bought the house so I'm not sure how much weight I trust it to hold. It has a trolley that I want to mount an overhead chain or electric hoist to. I am leaning more toward a chain hoist because I feel they are more precise.

Looking at something of that nature, anybody have any experience or opinion on them?

It will only be holding axles, bumpers, motors, my flatbed...all way under 1000 lbs.

any pictures of the beam? how is it built into the garage? More then likely the limiting factor with be how it is supported/built into the structure...

I will get a picture of the beam, but I haven't been above the ceiling to see how it is tied in. I know I'm running a risk, I fully intend on insulating the garage this summer and will go in the rafters and investigate that during that time. This is a horrible picture but you can barely make it out above the Jeep.

I understand that, I didn't ask about the beam, I asked about anyone's hoist experience. I use overhead hoists and cranes at work on a much larger scale. I'm not spun up on light duty hoists.

The craftsmanship on that joint compound sure gives me confidence the hoist was secured properly.

Take a look above the ceiling and see how it was anchored. Would be awesome to have an electric engine hoist with a remote...

Myself, I would rather have an engine hoist, pallet jack, fork lift. Engine hoists work great. Pallet jacks and fork lifts are great for bumpers and axles. The gantry cranes and equivalent are meant for Peterbilts with big CAT and Cummins diesels because an engine hoist won't work ;-)

I will have a crane in my garage when I rebuild but it won't be for engines. More for my truck's camper shell, tipping my M416 up when changing beds, top if I ever get a cheerleader Jeep, etc.
