One more time, Dutch has an XJ again!!

Ran into an issue welding up a bumper so I decided to take a break and go wheeling instead. My buddy in the brown XJ just finished installing his pieced together 3.5" lift and 33's yesterday so we took him out to MSV/Coney to test it out. It also allowed me to see what it would be like having all of the camping gear on the roof and in the hatch while wheeling. The jeep still felt really stable although it did lean more than normal. The rear tires also rub a fair amount with all the extra weight, but I think I found the culprit and will be able to get that fixed.

that looks like a SUPER fun area.

I really like your front bumpers too. When I have funds available(like after the wedding, so late winter) I will be hitting you up for one..

Went up Red Elephant to Bill Moore Lake this weekend and camped down in the valley by the lake. It was a good trip despite some rainy weather. I did finally set my JCR "Ultimate" Sliders on a rock, and they failed miserably. So that was fun, but all in all a good trip with no major issues.

Our group meeting up at Downieville:

Solarbell making an attempt at the 1 obstacle on Red Elephant. Sadly, the mud, moisture, and weight of all the camping gear resulted in all of our rigs (mine included) having to winch through it.

We stopped for lunch just before Red Elephant merged with Bill Moore Lake Road. Busted out the grills and had some Brauts and Dogs. The kids decided to try and fill a puddle with rocks.

Once we got up to the lake we set up camp, relaxed, and then started cooking dinner. We ate in style too with some fried potatoes and steak

Jim and I were going to run Spring Creek and camp one more night but unfortunately his t-case had developed an issue that sounded a lot like a slipping chain. It didn't fail on us but we chose it to be the wiser decision to just go home. The continuing rain along the I-70 corridor just further reinforced that decision so we grabbed lunch at Tommy Knockers Brewery in Idaho Springs and then called it a trip.

I think I'm going to leave the rest of the unloading for tomorrow.

Thats all of the pics I have of the trip, I'll get more from the other guys and post them up later.

Now for the JCR Ultimate Mall-Crawler Only Sliders

While spotting my wife through the 1 obstacle on Red Elephant the passenger side rocker set down on top and beside a nice big rock. And I literally mean, set down. It didn't slam down hard, in fact it went so smoothly onto the rock it didnt even make a sound. The Jeep pivoted on said rock as we tried to get the Jeep oover the next rock before finally admitting defeat and just winching through like everybody else. Afterwards I went to open the back door and was shocked to realize that just by leaning the Jeep into/on this rock my tubing on my rocker guard was now interfering with the door. Here is the aftermath:

You can see a nice big dent in the the tubing and in the door itself back where the tubing meets the rocker

The door now drags across the tube when you open it

Here you can see how it caused the entire rocker to fold in and deform

Even better in this pic, notice how the rocker was pushed in so much that the bottom edge of the door doesn't meet it at all

Here you can see how the plating from the slider actually caused the the sheet metal to tear as it pushed in

This also caused the backside going into the inner fender to deform outward with a nice jagged point

That nice jagged point decided to take my nearly new Krawler and tear it to shreds, so there goes 450$ worth of tire being chewed to crap by 450$ worth of useless slider

To make matters worse in my mind was the fact that all the other XJ's in our group pivoted along that rock in almost the exact same manner. Not only did the guys running traditional under the rocker sliders not suffer any damage, but my buddy running the same lift/tire size as me and no slider what so ever didn't suffer anything more than just a simple dent in his rocker. These "Ultimate" sliders actually caused me to suffer more damage than the guy w/o any rocker protection at all!

So yeah, tomorrow I'm going to a buddy's shop that has floor anchors and we're going to try to pull the rocker back down and out. I'll patch it up for now but over the winter these hunks of junk are getting cut off and I'm going with the 2x6 square tube rocker replacement method I should have done in the first place. So much for keeping the Jeep all nice.

I just posted this in the Vendor Advertisement section in JCR's thread on these sliders. And I'm sending Daryl another email.

I saw those a while back. Definitely slick looking armor.

My concern is all the flat plate being able to take a good drop on a rock and not tweaking. The round tube is welded to flat plate..... seems to me a strong upward hit to the tube would cause the flat plate to bend. Hard enough hit, and you may not be opening your door.

I dunno. I'd love to see some testimony from some others that smack the snot out of a set of those. I'm hoping it's all good.....

Man..... I was afraid of that happening. Sorry you had to be the guy this happened to Dutch. I'm not posting this as an "I told you so" just as another voice of concern about the design and strength of these sliders......

Yeah, the sad part is I didn't "smack the snot" out of them. The Jeep literally settled down against the rock and pivoted on it. Fracking rediculous really.

We all wound up winching through the obstacle, and even trying to go around it was treacherous as the hill was really steep and the dirt was wet and loose.

I tried spotting my wife through (its hard to spot myself so normally I'll have her hop in the driver seat) but in the end we winched it through to prevent breakage and save time.
