One Friggin Bolt

delayed my lift kit install by over 6 hours. holy carp. on my 84 xj, i got the stuff for my 4.5" lift nice and cheap, and decided today that i was going to put it all on. WRONG! every bolt on the back of the jeep came off like butter, until i got to the driver side body mount leafspring bolt:explosion!!!
this bolt came out of the threads nice, but was seized into the metal bushing in the leafspring, so i had to devise a plan to get it out without cutting anything. needless to say, it was a pain in the arse, and took 6 hours. the story behind how i did it is so long that i don't even want to put it in this post, and only in later ones on this thread if someone is actually interested, lol. anyway, in the process of getting that bolt out, i smeared the threads of the captive nut in the frame rail:explosion:explosion. so after another hour or so of trying to get a bolt to clean those threads, i finally notched a bolt to make a tap and GOT IT TO THREAD!! then the welds broke on the captive nut, and it started spinning. awesome. so i get above it under the back seat with a hole saw, and find out that there's a box there with the nut inside, and i can't even cut the bolt and just put another nut in there, so after another hour of trying to figger out how to get around that, my buddies helped me to decide to just cut a hole from the bottom of that little box, cut and replace that bolt, and just put another nut in from inside the hole. holy freaking moose pee.
so after all that, the rear half of my lift is done. i wonder what nightmare awaits me tomorrow when i try to finish it up, then drive it to jackson, tn to pick up my used tires.:passgas: i'm thinking that with my NP207 tcase, and my front driveshaft that was custom made to replace the old cv knuckle style shaft that was there, i'm going to have to go without a front shaft for a little while. it has a flange like a ford 8.8 on the front instead of a yoke that i can put a double cardan joint on. oh well, at least it'll look cool.:greensmok

Pictures or it never happened!

ive had that happen on both of my cherokees...first time i just cut out the weldnut, made a new one out of some plate and grade 8 nut, and welded it back in. 2nd time i was able to clean it up with a tap/die set (once i cut it loose from the old leaf pack with an angle grinder).

This happened to me also. We cut the leaf spring off with a torch and burned the bushing off to get the thing out. PITA! And I have pics somewhere to prove it.

Ive had 3 of those bolts on my two XJ's. Two on mine and one on the wifes jeep. They are a giant pain in the ass. No doubt about it. That bushing/sleeve is evil. Soon as i saw the title, I knew which one you were talking about.

Mark's '89 and my '88 required cutting the springs and eyes and then working the bolts out of the bushing sleeve. We got lucky and had no problems with the captured nut.

As promised.

so me and the middtennjeeperz guys got the lift done, but it's a little higher in the front, prolly because those springs are the heavier rate ones, for a 4.0, and i have a 4popper. so i'm gonna need some shackles, and i've got some binding in the front driveshaft. i need to find a front yoke for a 1310 ujoint to replace the flange that's on there designed for the pre-renix CV driveshafts so i can swap do a double cardan shaft. i think i already have a shaft that will work.... i wonder if i could swap in an np231. it currently has an np207.

you should be able to swap in an np231. just make sure that the 231 has the same input spline count as your 207.

okie dokie. fellas, i have a long weekend ahead, but on sunday i'll post up a couple of pictures. wingnutooa, if you'd like, you could post the ones i sent you, although they are shiddycellphone pics

Hate to say it but just took out my rear leaves and every bolt came off with just a breaker bar and a little effort. Gotta love a southern 00xj.
