oil pump priming

Hey everybody,
I'm putting a new engine in my 2001 Cherokee (4.0 I6) and was wondering how to prime the new oil pump. Thanks

Unplug the CPS. Crank the engine over til you see a pressure reading on your dash gauge. Plug the CPS back in and start it.

They make a tool that you insert in a drill, then remove distributor and insert it down into oil pump and spin it. You can make one from an old large flat blade screwdriver.

I spin it for a while until the oil pressure comes up, then while spinning it, have someone crank the engine or turn it over by hand several times. That gets the lifters primed and pumped up.

I use an old large flat head screw driver. Works every time. Make sure you reindex the cam sensor if you do that though.
