Alright. I've had enough with my XJ. I replaced my rear main seal and oil pan gasket a few days ago but I am still having a small leak that would eventually drop from the bottom of the V on the tranny... There does not appear to be anything coming from the oil filter adapter housing nor the valve cover gasket. I feel that I must have messed something up with my oil pan gasket. Is there anyone on the North side of Denver (I'm at 120th & I25) that could spare a few minutes to roll under it and give me their .02? It's driving me nuts and its a pita to take apart if that isn't the problem. Any help is appreciated.

hey if you want to drive down to the springs on saturday i can take a look at it and if it is the rear main still leaking i can fix it for you. give me a call at 719-229-5220 and we can work out a solution. dont worry i have plenty of rear main seals and a few oil pan gaskets so you dont have to buy the parts plus there is a trick that us dealership mechanics know to do so they dont leak.

Is this trick easy to describe? Mine is starting to weep so this is not in the too distant future.

ok for fellow xjers before you put the main cap back on a lot of the seeping and small leaks come from between the bearing cap and the block. a small thin bead of rtv along the end of the cap from the seal out to the edge then bolted and tourqed to 80ftlbs keeps it from leaking.

Caz came over last night.

His '01 engine was well loved with dirt and oil.

There was evidence of oil coming out of the valve cover gasket, none from the head gasket and none from the oil filter gasket.
There was also oil marks all around the pan gasket and maybe from the front crankshaft seal. He had just replaced the pan gasket and rear main seal.

I suggested that he start by degreasing and then power washing the engine to start with a clean surface.

I loaned him my leak detection light and dye.
He will check it several days after cleaning and should be able to tell pretty quickly where the leak is coming from.

Well I am almost leaning towards it being pre-existing oil. I degreased it pretty good and in the very small amount of driving that I have done, I have not noticed any oil anywhere. I haven't gotten a chance to dye the oil yet, but I will probably tomorrow evening. Thanks again for the help Craig... we'll see what I come up with!
