Oil drain

Anyone have the Fram quick oil drain tube (cannot remember what it is called) It has a QD with a hose on it, and it is supposed to drain easier. Is it good, is it worth it? Just curious.

I have one. It works. And it's easy and clean. But it does drain more slowly.

It is a type of plug, that is 2pcs. one replaces your oil drain plug. The other has an orange hose on it. You connect the orange hose fitting via QD, or something, and it depressed a valve of sorts and lets you drain without having to remove the plug at all. Supposed to save some time. But, am not sure if it is worth it. Just getting some info from others. Someone said in a post up that it is slower, but not sure.

It is slower because the diameter is reduced. I like it because the tube goes into a jug i use for disposal. Then I use the drainpan for the oil filter. Oil does drain faster when it is warm.

Very slow but very clean. Equals out in the end with the lack of cleanup time.
I like them enough I have them on every vehicle I own or have to change the oil on.

My only question after looking at them a few months or a year ago is do they get all the sludge out. When you drop the normal drain plug there is no or very little edging around the hole where the oil drains out. With the adapter in there thats not true anymore. I let mine drain for about 20 minutes normally and do it while it is still as hot as possible [ouch hot] to get the best flow. If it has been a long time between changes and the oil is really dirty I will even nuke a quart of dino oil in the microwave, carry it down with an oven mitt and dump that in and alot of times that will come out for about 8 or 9 seconds pretty dirty before it runs clear.
They, the adapters, are very handy for full belly skid plates on TJ's and YJ's and there are a couple of other types out there, one has a lever that is held in a detent that you push in and turn that works well but it has a pretty long piece of brass hanging out, that type I would not even consider unless it had a big skid plate under it, be a nitemare to snap of the brass end and drain the pan while rock crawling...

I hate to be less than truly helpful, but... I have one, I just haven't used it since I installed it. One problem is, if you ever take it to a mechanic & he has to drain the oil (for, say, doing a new rear main seal), he'll be a little confused at first by the weird plug, but once he figures out you just need a big wrench he'll take it out that way... but you have to warn him or he might throw it away & replace it with an OEM plug & that would suck.

As for whether it prevents sludge from draining: if you're worried about it, you can always remove it completely once every, oh, 3-4 oil changes to be more thorough (occasionally). Admittedly, it defeats the purpose of having the QD, but peace of mind is invaluable, so I intend periodically to do the old fashioned oil change.

rusty was supposed to send one with his skidplates. but i didn't get one. it turns out that my 91 has an odd size /pitch combination for the pan plug so fram doesn't list one for my engine. it would certainly help as it is a real pain to get my funnel in there and loosen the bolt to drain. just the getting the plug out without making too much mess probaly slows down the whole operation anyway.

I was looking to get one of those. I saw them at advanced auto parts, but I need to know the thread size and pitch of the drain plug. Does anyone know the size and pitch of the drain plug for a '94? Thanks.

You must not be married or you have a dedicated nuke machine. If I tried to do that around my houeshold, I'd be buying a brand new nuke machine the next day. :)

I just looked it up in the little Fram filter book and bought what they listed in there. I have a 94 as well. I have Rusty's engine/tranny skid and would not want to change the oil without it (the Fram thingy)

The oil drain is 1/2-20. Just bought a magnetic plug at NAPA for mine.
