oil brand

Co-op Max-Pro semi-synthetic diesel engine oil.

I will never use Castrol GTX again.

I run Valvoline durablend semisynthetic in my '91 with 69K on it, and Pennzoil in my '99 with 113K on it.

I just added 5 quarts of Royal Purple to my 140k Heep. You might still be able to find a good sale for that, with filter, for like 40 bucks at our local parts store.

On a related note, I typically run Castrol in my vehicles. When replacing the RMS on my 130K+ XJ, the oil pan and lower unit was extremely clean. No deposits or sludge whatsoever.

care to elaborate on that?

I run Royal Purple 10w30 in my XJ, have since 90k miles. It's at 230k now and every 7k when I change my oil it comes out still looking somewhat clean. If you use a regular non synthetic oil make sure it has sufficient ZDDP content, they are starting to leave it out of some oils because most newer cars don't require the same additives our XJs with the flat tappet cams use. There is a great thread on oil and additive packages on here if you search for it, this subject has been discussed many times.

I run Mobil 1 High Mileage in my XJ. Switch to 10w30 in winter and 10w40 in every other part of the year.

I put some in my '91, and after the oil change, the engine temps ran a little hotter. Now I wasn't overheating, or anything like that, but I was noticing higher temps. I went back and spoke with the manager at Napa, who I know to be a knowledgeable person, and I've had intelligent conversations with before. He asked me what oil I was running, and upon learning I had just did an oil change with Castrol, told me about a guy he had a few years back who came in looking for a thermostat. The guy only had 5K on the Jeep, was having cooling problems, and had just done the first oil change with Castrol. After being instructed to change the oil again using a drifferent brand, the cooling issues disapeared.

I then changed the oil, putting in the Valvoline the manager uses, and the engine temps returned to where they were before hand. Now I know some people who have run Castrol fine, but that was not my experience with it.

Whatever is on sale at Autozone except Pennzoil.

I spend the money on a quality filter (WIX/Mobil 1).

Never had a problem with over 200K on two engines I've ran this way, both of which I put 50k+ miles on myself.

I think people tend to overthink this oil bit. It's one thing if you've just built a stroker, or rebuilt a 4.0, it's another if you have something with 150k+ on it.

thanks for the info and ideas, I found a sale at advance auto for 5 quarts of cestrol GTX and a filter for 16.99 so I went and bout the sixth quart for full price, and I will see if that increase my temps.
