Good f'n timing... massive Taco recall today (for leaking rear diffs... for gods sake, couldn't they just ship a tube of RTV to every owner and tell them to STFU?)

Depends, on a vehicle with 100k yes just basic maintenance , but a new vehicle should not be leaking shortly after getting off the lot . It costs me about $50 to put fresh synthetic gear lube in my diff you should not need to do this for about 100k miles unless you mess up the diff or do gears and lockers .
