Offroad air filter options?

So the PO of my Jeep installed or had installed an aftermarket cotton fiber air filter and hose. Well, it just so happens that there's a blow-by issue going on and I'm working on getting that fixed.

Anyways, I plan to get a new filter and hose anyways, but I want to make it trail-worthy. Went thru some mud today for the first time in the XJ and was - to be totally honest - terrified of getting mud in the filter.

So what are some options I have as far as new set ups or modifying the current set up? Thanks!

(Searched google and the forums.)

edit: Or other options? Like running w/o filter. Idk. You guys tell me! :)

Honestly I would just throw a stock setup back into it, or a snorkel if you feel like you're going to need one.

Isolate your filter from the engine heat, and eveything else. My filtrer is still like new looking after a month and a half, and yes thats hittin mud and puddles etc.

Honestly I have ran two different types of "Cold Air Filters" and I wasn't happy my filter was getting dirty quickly, with the exposed filter I was afraid of water/mud and engine heat. I recently switched back to the stock airbox and dropped in a K&N flat panel air filter and I am totally happy. I actually think it works better.

A little different. Looks like mine would have to go thru the driver's side. Any problem with that?

I think the wiper motor may be over there, but I'm really not sure.

What is that on the firewall, the cruise control vacuum servo? You could probably relocate that fairly easily. BTW, that is the cleanest Renix engine compartment I've ever seen.

Search for "cowl snorkel intake" on here- there are some threads with some good links and ideas in it. Also search for "rain gutter snorkel" for some ideas on what not to do. ;)

The round thing? Not sure, but if it is that, I'd like to remove it. Don't need cruise cause it doesn't work anyways haha! Only thing on the Jeep that doesn't work.

Clean, eh? I was kind of embarassed of it. Haha.

I will have to pull up th vents to see if there's anything under there that'll block the filter, but I don't think there is.

I know for the aftermarket cone filters they make a sleeve that goes over it for off-road/wheeling

I'll do that if I can't run the hose thru the driver side cowl.

When I remove it, is there anything that should be done to the opposite ends of the electrical connections?

Nope, just yank it out. That being said, it should be easy to fix it if you want. Usually cruise not working is a vacuum leak, problem with the brake switch, or a sticky cruise button - should be on the end of the signal stalk on your year iirc. Even if you fix and keep it there is nothing sacred about the mounting position, just mount where it's convenient and extend the vacuum line(s) and wiring.
