King of the Hammers Promoter Dave Cole Stuns Racers in an Effort to Save the Hammers

Traditionally, the Griffin King of the Hammers has been limited to a field of 100 racers; twenty of whom gain entry into the race by competing in a Last Chance Qualifying (LCQ) race that happens in the days prior to the King of the Hammers. More than 70 drivers competed for one of the 20 remaining spots. After the completion of today's qualifying rounds, both drivers and spectators waited anxiously for news of which teams would move on to the main race and which teams would be packing up their vehicles to start their long journey home.

Hammerking Founder, Dave Cole, stunned the audience by announcing that all 70 drivers could compete in the main event and that proceeds from the additional drivers would go directly towards the fight to keep the Johnson Valley OHV area open. The future of Johnson Valley has been uncertain since the US Marine Corps made a proposal to expand the 29 Palms Marine Base into most of the area known to OHV enthusiasts as "The Hammers." The 188,000 acre OHV area is the largest in the country and comprises half of the public lands used for OHV recreation throughout the entire state of California. “The correlation between land use and these racers we are including could not be more appropriate,” Cole commented. “These are honest, hardworking people who come to Johnson Valley throughout the year not only to race, but for recreation as well.”

they're showing live interviews with the drivers after they leave contigency/tech right now at www.ultra4racing.com/live the UTV race should be starting soon.

Holy Sh1t! thats alot of revenue.

so even if he keeps the 400$ for the LCQ fee.
theres still $1250 x 70 = $87,500

Even if he keeps 1/2 that for needed expense for the added work load, security, etc - thats like 40K!

AWESOME JOB DAVE!

the traffic on lap 2 is going to be a bitch..

i'm 100% on board though.

yes it is definitely going to be a busy track. should make for either A) some really good racing, or B) some really bad traffic jams.

the major issue is IRC Trackers... How many can they furish!? I bet not enough, and provisions are made somehow..

ok just announced, Just pay the $$ and they prolly are a few trackers short, but they will make a provission somewhere, to make sure you get to race! Very cool!

Camo just said on the live feed regardless of whether the extra tracker parts show up the other racers will still run the race.

I'll have to get the DVD, too much work tomorrow for live feed.

I'll bet it'll look awesome on my new TV ;)

Those Video's are insane, Baja 1000 Vids will never be as exciting again.

hell yes, it seems like already they are stepping up the production value from last year which was great. this year's DVD will definitely be on the must have list for me.

for those that where there or are still there. is there much to see from not far of the camping area? thinking of loading up the fifth wheel and heading out in the early morning, but no jeep or anything. just little bikes for the kids to play on. how far is the camping area to any of the action. obviously wont be able to much of the crawling like back door or anything. but is there anything near by?

not really, it's at least a mile in the dirt to get to something worth seeing unless you like just seeing the rigs haul ass past you in the flats or watch the start/finish line.

ya thats what i kind of figured. and i am sure finding a camping spot this late wont be anywhere close either. i can disconnect the the truck and drive closer to a viewing spot, but it is an F550. it is 4x4, but a 550 is not much of an offroad vehicle. still, may just load up anyhow and check it out. have never been out there before for neither the race or just play.

they just announced on the live feed that the jumbotron will be up in the main area showing life feeds from 5 different sections of the race course all day, should be a good spectator spot actually if you wanted to head out.

just announced on the live feed, There are at least 150 rigs on the LCQ list! they are allowing entry into the main event to ALL entries in the LCQ, including both DNF and DNS entrants. they have until 4pm to register for tomorrrows race.

So, we've gone from 80 qualifiers plus 20 LCQ qualifiers... to 80 qualifiers plus 150 LCQ qualifiers. That's potentially 230 vehicles in tomorrows main event! It's going to be a mad house out there.

The 150 should include the 80 pre-qualified.

Everyone had to compete in the LCQ for starting position this year.
