OEM stereo connections

So I bought a 1990 XJ that had an aftermarket stereo that was stolen out of it about 3 weeks before I bought it.

In what seems to be a minority move, I prefer the factory stereo versus the fancy aftermarket stuff, so I got a factory Jeep AM/FM cassette deck off E-bay for $10.00.

Now here is where my questions come.

The stereo has a connector in the back that is rectangular and is maybe an inch and a quarter long. There are 13 flat metal tabs that get inserted into the wiring harness. I think it is the male end.

The wires coming out of the dash are also 13 in number, but it is in 4 separate clips with round tabs. These are also male ends. There are 2 clips of 4, a clip of 3, and a clip of 2.

I talked to the guys at Best Buy when I went to buy an adaptor and he verified that the 4 seperate plugs are factory (there are no splices or anything and they all run directly into the factory taped wire harness), and it was different that anything that he'd seen.

So, the stereo I bought off E-bay was a 1992 model, and it fits in my 1985 XJ, so it should fit my 1990. Could it be possible that my 1990 came with only a base model AM/FM and the harnesses were different?

Can anyone with a 1990 verify my situation, or can anyone suggest why I might have this odd harness?

Thanks y'all!

Just swapped the OEM cassette radio out of my 1990 Ltd last night...

The OEM radio has a sticker on it - model no. 56002467. It had a single ractangular plug, not four seperate ones. Perhaps your vehicle had a special option system fitted.

Wiring on my radio was
Top row pins 1-7 from left to right, no empty pin
Bottom row pins 13-8 from left to right, missing pin between 11 and 10

1 L R Speaker Feed Green/White
2 L F Speaker Return Green
3 Power Antenna Grey
4 Battery Pink
5 Acc/Ign Purple/Orange
6 R F Speaker Feed White
7 R R Speaker Feed White/Black
8 R R Speaker Return Brown
9 R F Speaker Return Black
10 Panel Dimmer Orange/Black
11 LCD Dimmer Blue/White
12 L F Speaker Return Black/White
13 L R Speaker Return Brown/White

Ground (black) is connected to the radio chassis, not through the plug.

I just swaped out my cassette deck for an aftermarket and i had one large rectangular opening. When I bought the adapter to plug into the existing wires the "Chrysler/Jeep" connector did not fit. I bought one that was supposedly for imports but fit the jeep, and it sounds like we had the same radio. I don't know if this helps... - Jon

+1 maybe yours is a "stock or base" model. My Limited has a factory Jensen 6 speaker system with an amp under the rear seat.
