OEM Radios that will fit

Hi folks... New member of the forums here... I've got a '98 2WD 4.0L that got broken into last week. They stole my Alpine head unit and my Infinity subwoofer. I'm trying to decide what to replace the head unit with, but I'm thinking the more stock-looking the better.

My question is whether any other Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler OEM stereos will fit in the mounting location for my 98 Cherokee. I want one that has a CD player in it, but CD+tape would be pretty cool. I still have my OEM head unit, but it's a tape-only. Did Wranglers get the same head units as Cherokees? Are the OEM units that were in the Infinity system compatible with an aftermarket amplifier that has speaker-level and RCA input jacks?

I took an am/fm cd/cass. out of a 97 XJ and put it in a 97 Voyager. Now it is in a 98 ZJ. If its factory and plugs in it should work. HTH, Jim

After some more research (mainly on Ebay), I've found that certain years' head units won't fit. There are some that are labelled with "Infinity Gold" and some AM/FM/CD units that have different mounting tabs. Mine has one on the right side and one on the bottom. Some have one on the bottom and one on the top, but those are usually all older units. Most of the ones from newer Grand Cherokee's look like they won't fit. So it looks like there are probably 3 options. An AM/FM/Casette, an AM/FM/CD, or an AM/FM/CD/Cassette. I'll probably go with the last option. They seem to be going for $150+ on Ebay though. That's a bit steeper than I expected.

I know Pioneer makes aftermarket stereos that fit the opening, and I saw an Alpine that fit the opening on Ebay, but I don't think Alpine makes that model any more. I guess those would defeat the purpose of having the stock radio for avoiding theft though.

I'm gonna miss having mp3 in my Jeep.

Why not get adapter plate and stick any aftermarket radio you want? The plat was $10, harness was $15 and I put in a JVC unit that has mp3 CD in it

I am about to put a pionere (sp?) unit back in that was in my Ford Ranger, then in my XJ that was hard wired (some shmuck cut the harness), and now is wired with an addapter $10 for my 94 conversion! It plays stuff I burn all the time and I know for a fact that it was around b4 burners!

I don't want to put an aftermarket in because I'm afraid it'll just get broken into again. Since the OEM doesn't fit every car out there, it's a little less tempting to steal, I think... /shrug

Well... often people steal first look later..... get an aftermarket and remove the face plate... I think that'd be a bigger deterrent....

Faceplate was off of the one that they stole... Problem was that the faceplate was in the center console.

In my '99 XJ, I have a '97 Dodge Sebring's CD/Cass unit. The bolt holes did not line up perfectly, but with a plastic shim the unit does not move around. It was a direct plug in, no problems.
