OEM 5 Spoke Alloy Wheels

Couldn't you coat it with a bunch of clearcoat or some other protectant and then just lightly sand off the gloss? i dunno what it would look like, but probably better than gloss black..

Nice job XJ91! I plan on painting the same set of tires. Mine are very ugly. I'm going to try it with the tires on (crappy stock tires, temporary) Except I plan to paint the inner part between the spokes silver and the rest black. Give em a little more bling... I'll try to post pics if they turn out halfway decent.

I refinished a set of five spoke aluminum wheels. The first thing I did was bead blasted them with GLASS BEADS. then I sanded the wheels wher the metal was polished starting with 220 and working down to 2000. then I started to polish with tripoli compound , them went to white rouge, and finished with red rouge using an angle buffer with a felt buffing pad. then I thoroghly cleaned the wheels with some sudsy ammonia. the I masked off the polished areas, and painted the painted areas with some dover gray base coat. then I removed the tape, cleaned any residue fron the tape with some solvent, and gave them 10 coats of clear coat. the result was bling bling.

by the way, steel is an alloy, so shouldn't steel wheels be called alloy wheels to????????

Would like to see pics and .... how many hours did you put in?

Yeah steel is an alloy, it can not be mined and is not on the periodic table. Aluminum is on the table and the wheels use to be known as Aluminum Alloy Wheels when I was much younger. Before the term "alloy wheels" there were Mags, which stands for Magnesium, which was a componant of early racing alloy wheels. They were typically spoke type designs.

More than you wanted to know, right?

im not sure of how well the spray can clear will work on wheels with the stress and pounding they get offroading. i have used the cpray can clear before on a bmx bike and a dirtbike i had a while ago. as for the bmx bike it got stolen and i got it back, it was a different color and i liked the look of just the bare metal. it looked pretty good that way and the only way to stop it from getting rusty is to paint. so i had my dad take me to parts america(now advanced auto). sprayed the bike quite a few times. used 2 cans. i used to crash alot. held up great on that. lasted me about 3-4 years until it got stolen again so i just bought a new bike. as for the dirt bike wheels. my dad boughts me black wheels from the huge wheel company that make motocross wheels. havent been around the sport in a while so i forget the name. well there alot of money and before we took em to the shop to have the spokes and hubs installed we used spray can clear on them and it worked great. didnt chip, scratch off or anything. and i ran the hell outta that bike until that got stolen too. my suggestion would be spend the $20-30 on the paint and clear and give it a shot. it may work and it may not. better then spend a couple hundred on powder coating. unless it doesnt work and you get em powder coated anyway. by the way yea alot of stuff gets stolen from me. one more thing if you have state farm home owners insurance they will not cover anything stolen out of your house, shed where ever you keep your stuff if it has a motor. yea my dirtbike was stolen out of my basement. they wouldnt give me any $ for it cause it had a motor. hth shawn

I took me about an hour a piece to blast the rims. Polishing took about two hours a piece. Paint took an hour for all five. Sorry, I have no pics, but they looked good on the 88 wagoneer limited that they were on.

Would it be feaseable to use a similar approach on these. I really dont have much experience painting. I can't tell if any of the scratches would buff out and they aren't in my possession till late next week. What do you guys think? This is the worst of the 4 I'm receiving I believe.
