ODB I on an 89 XJ

I have read a few posts that have said that pre 1991 XJ's did not have a system capable of producing diagnostic trouble codes. I was recently looking over the manual for an AutoXray and read that "...beginning in 1982 and by 1989 all new cars and light duty trucks sold in California had to have OBD-I." Is it possible that a pre '91 XJ equipped with CA emissions could give OBD-I codes? Does anyone have a pre '91 XJ with an OBD connector? If so where is the connector located?

Pre-91 (Renix) 4.0's had a diagnostic connector, and there is or was a device capable of reading it. I think someone on the old XJ forum even had one of these, but he was in finland or somewhere not very convenient, and the device is both hard to find and expensive. There is a module available for Snap-On diagnostic testers too, also pretty pricey. The system does not store codes, though, and there is no on-board readout without the tester. Starting in 91 the Chrysler system works as REd91 describes, until whatever time they came out with the OBDII system now current.

there is a diagnostic scanner for the earlier xj's. it doesnt store any codes unless it is an active code. the scanner is really onlt good for seeing sensor values, o2, tps etc.
