So this shit is getting pretty legit. A week ago I was lauging at a few hipsters from Williamsburg who thought they could prove a point, now they're 20,000 strong with growing support- we can sit on our computers all we like (*cough* politics forum *cough*) but these kids are actually doing something about it. my thoughts: thomas jefferson was against the banks going private, and i guess you can say he "predicted" this over 200 years ago. fox news was calling the protestors "traitors" and "anti-american" when this country was founded on those principals.

what say you, naxja? :geek:

"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered...I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."

-Thomas Jefferson

I'm watching them start as new demonstration in downtown LA as I type, probably not gonna have the same staying power as the one in NYC, this being LA and all.

LAPD is already dispersing, this should get good...

oh they are protesting Jeffersonian theory? awesome I thought it was just a bunch of underemployed youths

wealth is created when work produces value, swing a saw and a hammer on some lumber and make something somebody wants to buy. seizing somebody else' wealth is destruction not creation. wall street is not preventing the creation of new wealth, in fact they facilitate it by providing access to capital (so that you can buy the lumber and tools). so what is the protest about anyway?

at least they aren't burning anything ... yet

There is already a thread in the Political Discussion Zone addressing this............ http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1039161&page=24

“Now that Moveon.org, Obama and Biden have all come out in support of OWS, we now know that it was never anything more than just an Obama re-election rally. Somehow, OWS keeps thinking it is “outside” the system when it is in the very center of the system.”

Wall street certainly facilitates capital markets. There's no doubt.

It's when Wall Street manipualtes capital markets for thier own gain is when there is a problem.

Wall Street, with the assistance of out federal governemnt has risen above the rules of free markets.

When Wall Street can borrow from the fed with virtually interest free loans... who do you think pays for that? Money ISN'T free.

my wife works for moveon.org and has been down there a bunch, I have been down twice just to see what's going on, it's LEGIT

they have cooking galleys set up, the largest union in the world just donated enough food to feed everyone for a week or two and will be back with more, a couple other large unions have donated office space in the city to help organize them, the decisions down there are made democratically which I'm pretty sure is the way it's supposed to be done, they have legal tents set up also to help with keeping everything (for the most part) on the up and up

put it this way, if you are making under 250-300k a year these people are protesting to make your life better, you can bitch all you want on the internets or you can go out and do something about it

You can protest all you want, but if you want some of my money, get off your lazy ass and do what I did to get it.

Hey I'm opposed to bank bailouts too (they should have been allowed to fail and their assets bought at their true market value). That is not at all the same thing as being opposed to private banking. However these protests appear to be against banking in general, and not about the bailouts (much less about Jefferson's feelings towards a quasi-public reserve bank).

Who are the active participants here? Moveon? Unions? yeah they're always reasonable

Don't give me any of that, you had all the advantages BS. I left home at 15, finished high school, worked my way through college, got a job and worked my ass off while raising 4 kids, and 5 grand kids. By keeping a job, not expecting others to support me, I have gotten to where I make good money. Why do you think the fair share for me should be more than the fair share for you. Just because you are to damned lazy to make something of yourself instead of leaching off those of us who actually put in the effort and work.

this country is XXXXed, people like oldman take any critisizm of the system as a personal attack, as if we're critisizing them cause theyre succesfull.

we're critisizing a system that's PWNT by corporations that dont pay shit for taxes, and trick idiots into thinking THEYRE the rich people under attack... corporations whipe their ass's with your life savings old man, nobody's coming for your fish sticks.

shits so painfull... we're going down, no XXXXng doubt about it, romes burning.

yup. i can agree with you in politics for once. i'm no liberal, but the basic idea of OWS makes sense to me, and i can agree with it. the upper middle class kids who are lazy asshats without jobs marching here can shove it, but there ARE people who have been legitimately effed by whats going on in wall street, kids who are TRYING to get jobs and cant, and STFU when you say pick up a hammer, you can barely survive over here in and around nyc... if you have a college degree you simply wont get a job working at mcdonald's flipping burgers bc you're overqualified and have more education than the store manager, so they'll pay some illegal $6.50 an hour instead. and good luck trying to swing a hammer or cut a lawn, get behind the 2-300 immigrants at home depot who will work twice as hard for half as much.
