What spec oil should be used, dealer or not? This is for a 2000 TJ.

No, the NV3550 can use that new manual transmission lube in the yellow containers from AutoZone (Shell, maybe? Don't recall the brand.). That stuff doesn't have the same GL-5 extreme pressure additives required for the AX-15 and is not to be used in the AX-15. I contacted the manufacturer some time ago when we were trying to get at the truth about the sulpher-bearing additives eating the synchros in the AX-15s. The engineer I spoke with told me not to use this stuff in a tranny calling for GL-4 or GL-5, but that it was engineered specifically for the NV3500 and NV4500 families of transmissions.

Actually from what I know they use an altogether differnt lube then the AX15. Don't know the specifics, but I know it's not the same as a regular fluid either.

The NV3500 takes PN#4874464 specially formulated synthetic oil
The NV4500 takes Synthetic 75W straight weight manual trans oil part#4874459

Draw your own conclusions as this is the only info DC gives me.

So then you did find out the truth about the AX15 GL3 vs GL5 conundrum? How come I never heard about the outcome? And here I was thinking I had been running the wrong fluid in my AX15 all these years and just waiting for it to grenade. :yelclap: I bet my shifting problems are clutch & throwout bearing related then, rather than synchro related. Not that it matters, it has been over a year since Gamara has even been wheeled. :tears:

Sorry for the hijack, BTW.

I don't think you will ever get to the bottom of the truth. I remember a point where it came out to be that the gl3 was meant to be used through all the years but in error a year or two has the manual listing gl5, but more recently some have claimed that older ax15 could use gl5 while newer has to use gl3, some claim that there are other fluids that could/would/should work... but my take on the subject is that at whatever extra the gl3 costs, it's worth it to go with it and avoid the headache altogether.
