NSS will not come out! Now stiff shifter

I started having probs awhile back with my reverse lights not coming on. No big deal I just used the aux lights I put in. Well now I started having probs with it not wanting to turn over in park. Not something that happens all the time but here and there like when I'm late for work :bawl: . It would start in neutral but that was getting bad and I would wiggle the shifter to get it to start. I finally got the time to try to pull the NSS to rebuild it but that is where this ends. I threaded the nut on a few turns like I read about and used a screwdiver to pry but it only comes about halfway off and it will not pull any further! I finally gave up and tried to put it back on but must of screwed up the threads a bit that the nut goes on so that will not tighten very well. Then I tried the shifter and there is some stiffness in it that I did not have before. I managed to get some stiffness out but not all the way. Now I have it starting in park with no probs yet but not in neutral at all. Anybody have any ideas that would help me? I couldn't even replace it at this point if I wanted instead of rebuilding with the trouble of getting it off. Any help would be great so it stops kicking my butt! hasta

You may only need to adjust the NSS. Also, lot's of crud can cake up on the exposed part of the shaft. Try cleaning it off and use some PB Blaster or some other penetrating oil. I used some emery strips to clean mine up a bit when I did mine.

Also try using 2 pry bars instead of just one (one on each side of the center shaft). It will spread the prying force more evenly across the NSS instead of cocking it on the shaft (insert jokes here) as would happen when trying to pry it from one side only.

From the sounds of the shifter problem, it may be cocked a little, and is binding on the shift shaft (not sure what the actual term is for it).

You took off the 12mm bolt on top right? Just checking.

I pull them at junkyards and they can be a pain, but it just seems you have to get the magic angle then they slide right off.

I first take the top bolt off, then use a flathead screwdriver to pry using the lower nut, against the pan. Then just poke and prod around the NSS until it slides.

Good luck!

I usually pull a few NSS, TCUs, and ECMs for resell on eBay. It pays for everything else I actually need. Funny thing is that most buyers don't realize that the NSS can be cleaned and ECM and TCUs are rarely bad.
