Not the Runt Anymore!

Well, it's good to hear you're getting new bushings....... sucks that you gotta take it all apart and spend the time forcing them out, and new ones in.

WD-40, a 7/8" deep socket and a bench vice generally makes short work of pressing in/out those bar pins. (Use the socket around the bushing so that the bar pin has somewhere to go as the other side of the vice pushes the bar pin thru the bushing.) Ya dig?

we had to do this on my buddies shocks he got BPE's and they weren't the right ones (HCP4X4) and ended up bending one of the old bar pins he had a couple old shocks sittin in the shed and we used those bar pins took about 5 mins in and out

I dig. The only problem is I don't have a bench vise. Last time I had to install shock bushings and bar pins I was able to get them in by laying the thing on the ground and standing on them. I'm hoping that'll work this time around too...

LOL! Well, at least you've done them before and know what you're in for.

Have fun!

....ancient Chinese secret.................

Vaseline

Just don't tell anyone what you are using it for, make them guess, Example: "Honey do we have any Vaseline, okay, I'll be in the garage for a while..........." :greensmok

They will slip right in with no major fuss..............that didn't sound right?

There are sooooo many gutter-minded responses coming to mind right now that would be more appropriate for the Dumpster Diver's Den than here...

I've received suggestions using grease, WD-40, rubbing alcohol, and now Vaseline. I happen to have enough bushings to replace that I can test all of them. ;) Maybe I'll feel adventurous tonight and do that.

I've used a bench vice as mentioned above and a C-clamp a bit tricky but easy and yes any kind of lube would help to slide those one.

Grease, WD-40 and vaseline are all the same in a sense, making the bushings slide in easier. Grease is really messing, WD-40 doesn't stay on the bushing in enough quantity long enough, vaseline is easy to clean up and not as messy as grease...........and there is always the humor aspect involved :)

rubbing alcohol? ....never heard of that unless you are trying clean it up? Dries out too fast and not exactly a lubricant.......

All the suggestions listed above will work, but for me I just got an extra set of hands, greased up the bushing and slid in the bar pin then used a pair of pliers and while one held the shock put pressure against the bushing/ bar pin combo and it slid right it all lubed up :)

PB-Blaster to get the old ones out. It will degrade the rubber, cause it to swell. It does that to all rubber.

I used WD and a bfh to get an old bar pin out for re-use. Having the pin out made the bushing easier to work with.

here is your change .01 :roflmao:

I make me crack up..............I don't think he has anything to worry about getting the old bushings out, they are all disintegrated to begin with!!!!

Come on and get that thing finished jawa2021 so you can wheel it!

That sure is true. I replaced the front bushings last night - the old ones had crumbled apart and what was left just fell out. I chose the Vaseline approach and it worked well. I got one side in using a socket and pressing it in by hand, the other side required pressing it in by foot. :)

I'm not looking forward to the back. I sheared off all 4 shock bolts when I first replaced my shocks and cut in through the floor to break the weld nuts loose and replace them. To cover the holes I cut some covers out of aluminum sheet, ran a bead of RTV around the edges, and riveted them down. I can't weld, so the new nuts/bolts aren't welded in. Every time I want to replace shocks I have to pull up the carpet, drill out the rivets, pull the covers, clean up the RTV, and do everything in reverse order when I'm done. It's a great way to waste a couple of hours.

Along those lines... is there anybody with a welder that's willing to weld a few bolts into place so that this will be the last time I have to pull up my floor?

I can weld them up for you however it would have to be this weekend, sat or sun, as nights are rough with me as I have my 9 month old side kick hanging out chillin' with daddy (as the wife works at night) but I noticed you are all the way in Aurora as well............I am all the way up north in Broomfield :)

It is up to you though...........let me know.

Thank you very much Skully! Unfortunately I won't be able to make it up this weekend though. I'm leaving for Silverton on Sunday and have Saturday packed full of last minute To-Do's before I leave. On top of that, after doing an oil change last night my pressure guage is sitting at 60 cold/warm idle and pegged over 80 while driving. Gotta figure that one out now too. Hopefully just a bad filter or sender...

When you get back PM me and the offer is still out there.

You going away all week for the Labor day weekend following this one as well or getting out of town to avoid the DNC? :)

Thanks again Skully, I'll probably take you up on that. Maybe I'll just duct tape the holes in the back for this trip and finish it up right when I get back. I'm only going Sun-Wed, so I'll be back in time for the Labor Day weekend... and the DNC.
